I've been looking to get a little car for my son (24) who at this moment is taking lessons.
I had a car in mind and thought I'd get an insurance quote for him as the main driver and me as a named driver.
Now I'm expecting a quote for silly money ,like4 figures silly but to my surprise under £500 TPFT .
I'm wondering if I've done it right or not
Of course I'll double check over the phone but what a surprise

I think it’s better to go for fully comprehensive, the price is usually similar (sometimes even cheaper)...

Yeah ill play with the meerkat later just to see 👍

I gather I put this in the wrong place ,, sorry

I've nearly always found that there are cheaper deals to be had than those offered up by comparison website such as Go Compare etc. Maybe that's because the Insurance House has to pay the comparison website a fee for the business, or maybe it's just because the comparison websites typically only provide quotes from the larger Insurance Houses\Underwriters. They do also tend to work on a pretty generic application - so the actual quote you get from the agent may well be significantly different. For specialist ie classic cars, endorsements, limited mileage, young driver etc you're often better scrolling down through the first page of comparison websites and going direct to the agent. I've always used Lancaster for my classic Mercs - usually underwritten by KMG, and the prices I've paid are insanely cheap compared to the more mainstream companies I'd been quoted by on comparison sites - likes of Adrian Flux, Aviva, Admiral etc... However if it's only a 'little car', presumably meaning under 1200cc, then £500 sounds about right for a 24 year old inexperienced driver. It should drop quite a bit when he has a full licence and hits 25 - apparently the magical age when we all grow up overnight and become low risk, responsible law abiding motorists... ;-)

I think anything sub £1000 for a new driver irrespective of age is great!

As others have mentioned as soon as you hit 25 things calm down a bit.

Saying that my prices have been pretty consistent.

As a learner driver he has to be supervised - Learner drivers rarely crash their own cars.
When he passes his test, and can therefore go out on his own (or with non-supervising passengers) the risk will rise.
When he is 25 he is considered to be a safer driver.

I will be interested to hear how much the insurance cost changes (increases) when he passes his test.

Well blow me o_O I went down the fully comp route for my sons insurance ( just checking it out)
And its £30 cheaper , I don't fully understand how but when we get his car
Comprehensive it will be 👍
Thanks for the heads up on that every one , let's go car hunting

Possible Insurance Algorithms - Fewer insurers offer Third party fire and theft insurance, so those that do so can charge higher premiums.
And/or, people who are interested in third party only insurance may not care too much about their own vehicles (and therefore may be involved in more incidents).

Well we got a car a little 207 1400cc
Insurance ended up being £569 with the basic add on's
Although I expect that to rise when he's passed his test and can go out on his own unsupervised 😁
