Interior courtesy light not working automatically on SLK

I've just purchased a SLK 2008. Everything is fine except we can't get the courtesy light to work automatically - are we doing something wrong? as the bulbs seem OK and work when you press the reading lights, but they just won't wok when you open the doors or take the key out of the ignition.
Apart from this little niggle the car is smashing!

Have you got the switch in the overhead control panel set to auto? Usually they are a 3 position switch with the centre position as Auto..
