Hi,

have recently got our W168 A160 LWB manual, but have now got some starting problems, i have searched on-line but cannot realy find any answers, so any help would be greatly appreciated before taking it to a garage.

it stared very intermittant, turn the key and didn't even try turning just slight wuring noise, then some times started second attempt, other times i think the immobiliser locked it out for 10 mins (this is assumptions made from other online research.

this gradually got worse but now, most of the time when starting from cold it will try turning over, but not fully, this could happen up to about 10 times before it starts, or occasionally during tring to start, the first symptoms appear and immobiliser kicks in again.

it will always push start with minimal effort, and the battery is good, even tried starting with jump leads to another running car but made no difference.

once started and run for about 5-10mins it will turn off and on no problems.

When it started turning over but not starting straight away the Engine Light came on, so got myself a maxiscan and the following codes were prescent:

P0335 Crankshaft Position Sensor A Circuit Malfunction
P0600 Serial Communication Link Malfunction

after resetting the codes the light came on again when it had trouble starting and just P0335 was on.

I hope this makes sence and any help would be great

Thanks

You may have two issues. It is difficult to tell really. If the engine is NOT cranking with a good battery then I suspect a faulty starter motor as they suffer with this issue.

But. You have a crankshaft sensor fault. They also go wrong on the 168's. This will cause a non start (usually when hot) where the engine cranks over but will not fire.

Thanks, been to a mb specialist they have said the starter motor and approx £600 to supply and fit new one, think the crank shaft code may be misleading as this only comes on when it has had trouble turning over?

is that about the right price for new starter motor?

£600 is a bit top heavy. £450 is more like it.

looks, like i'll have to be digging deep into my pocket then:(

but i will get a couple of other quotes first.

I don't suppose if this is a common problem it is a re-call from MB and they will do it for free?

Nope.
