iOS 5.1

First time I tried the update it failed, waited a couple of hours then it worked.

Yes, I also find it quicker than before.

Still no joy....I'm pretty sure it's something to do with the phone settings, but o2 tech support is a chocolate teapot

Are you getting a message like "update is not available - try later" if yes then that is their server.

Try just doing it from Settings - General - Software Update ensure that you have a either mains connected or USB power.

or

Pull it from i-toons

I was rather hoping that the signal dropping issue might have been resolved. My phone will display signal strength that bears no relation to reality. Sometimes it says no signal "searching" but then the phone rings and I can make calls. Other times I have a full whack signal reading but cannot make or receive calls.

I live in Kent and have no 2G signal but do have a very good 3G reception. I know people say switch off 3G and that helps. If I do that I have nothing at all.

I am not too sure mine is any faster. What do you notice has speeded up?

No, I'm getting the message:

"Contacting the iphone software update server..."

And it stays like that for as long as you leave it.

Tried on Toons and wifi....sempre niente.

It might be an obvious thing to do, but just in case you haven't tried it yet: restart the phone (long press on top ON/OFF button and slide the top red to shut down, wait 20 sec, then another long press of the button) - it should clear the way to redo the update once more from the top.

Yes, I already tried that but tried again......mais encore rien

Finally got there by changing the DNS settings to Google Public...:bannana:

Thanks for all the help/suggestions

I updated my iPhone 3GS and iPad 2 over the air and it worked a treat

Updated my wife's iPad plus a friends - all over the wifi - no problems

Updated my and the wife's iPhone last night over the WiFi.
No problems except mine took three times as long.
Anyone noticed any improvements on battery life?

I think i have bricked my Iphone. It was turning itself off and on probably about every 5 minutes so i went about restoring it in Itunes.

Used a custom image which kept the baseband preserved as the phone was locked on Orange and i dont use Orange. If i used the default image from Apple the phone would be locked on Orange forever.

But now the phone just sticks in DFU mode. I have even tried restoring to a Apple image just to get the phone working but it doesnt work. Itunes states your phone will be restored, wait for it to reboot, but then Itunes just says your phone is in recovery mode and must be restored before it can be used after each attempt.

The only way it turns on is using Redsn0w and tethered boot. However unplugging the phone and turning it off means it is stuck in DFU mode and will not turn on.
Any ideas?

Here are the steps to get out of DFU mode:

1. Hold down the "home" + "power" button simultaneously.
2. After 12 seconds of holding, release the home button and continue to hold the power button until the apply logo screen comes on.
3. pat yourself on the back.

Hope this helps in some way

I think you mean keep holding the home button in step 2, but i have already tried this.

I hold the power+home button until i hear the computer make the usb connected noise, then hold the home button until i hear the computer make the noise again.

This used to make the Apple logo show up but it doesnt now. The only way to get it to turn on is using the tethered jailbreak button in RedSn0w. Doing this however means the SIM card doesnt work and displays no signal so this isnt a solution unfortunately.

If i use TinyUmbrella and Recovery Fix, the screen goes bright white for about 5 minutes before a little script from greenp0ison is run which errors out at the end.

I think you need to hold the "home & power" button until just before the apple logo appears. I-tunes should then say it has detected an i-phone in recovery mode. Follow the steps in i-tunes to recover.

If the apple logo appears when you are holding the buttons then you held them for too long and need to try again.

I get no Apple logo at all when holding down the buttons now. Just have to listen for the Windows USB device noise.

When i go into Itunes it detects the Iphone in recovery mode. But when i restore the phone it tells me to wait for the phone to restart, then it will show up in Itunes.

However, after the countdown finishes the computer makes the Windows USB sounds and then Itunes states the phone is in recovery mode and needs to be restored. This goes on in a loop.

Ok. If the phone is jailbroken you may have to try your luck with Google. Jailbroken phones are a black art. It sounds like the firmware has locked up.

Cheers for your help and everyone else.

I have been googling for ages but everything i try doesn't work.
I only really wanted to get the phone unlocked, but to do that it had to be jailbroken. Presume cause of its age its a 3GS it wont have any warranty, isnt it only a year at Apple?

But if they find the Baseband has been changed or its jailbroken they probably wont touch it, but as it doesnt turn on normally at all, not sure how they can tell.
