A quick question... if I plug an IP phone, like the "Cisco Small Business Pro SPA922 1-line IP Phone" into a POTS line... what happens?

The reason I ask is I want a feature that that phone has, nominally incoming caller mapping (i.e. calls from certain identified callers can be sent straight to the answering machine)

Any ideas?

Nothing.

POTS is analogue. The Cisco is basically an ethernet device.

Darn... I've seen some converters.. I wonder if they retain the caller id data...

ISTR that you can get adapters for around £75 and up that will take PSTN and talk VOIP.

However you may find your Cisco phone troublesome. It's a couple of years since I last played with Cisco phones but my recollection is that by default they didn't do SIP. On some models you required a firmware upgrade. So check yourv specs.

The other hassle is the power over ethernet. You may find that you need to get a separate supply for your phone if you don't already have one assuming that the adapter won't provide POE to the phone..

Ok, maybe I'm approaching this from the wrong angle...

I keep getting calls from 3 specific numbers; the annoying bit is that they are not in the U.K. - but one appears to have a U.K. prefix (+44). Apparently, the country they are from "borrows" some of the british mobile numbers... but to call back, you cannot dial the same number, you need to dial the other countries dialing code - very weird!

Anyhow, virgin don't want to know anything about blocking these numbers (or even the country they are from, I don't care, I just want to sleep!) so am trying to find a phone that will either not ring, or send those numbers straight to voicemail...

ideas?

Get virgin to change your number? Report the calls as crank calls and if it persists Virgin have to block them dont they? (BT used to do this )

Changing the number was my first thought - but then telling all my family, friends the new number would be a pain...

As for having to block them, I'm not sure...

I know there are telephones that allow you to blacklist numbers - I just can't find the page I saw them on!

EDIT: Found exactly what I need!

Received my truecall unit yesterday - it's worth every penny!

I now have ordered the "call recorder upgrade" (i.e. an sd card) and the extender...

The great thing is, I've set it up to be totally transparent... so the caller doesn't hear the "go away" message - but their phone just keeps ringing as if no-ones home!

Also, their customer service is fantastic (I got a free extender as they needed some beta testers).

Hi,

Any reviews on the Truecall please? Sounds like it could be used to get rid of all the additional BT services I am paying for.... a single BT line service charges are over £70 /qtr at resent and with 3 lines I need to reduce the costs!

Any advise/feedback would be appreciated.

DS Liverpool, how mcuh can you do one of these for please?

Thanks guys!

Was!

Check here for a review http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B001ENB0H4/?tag=amazon0e9db-21 scroll down to see

These are now in stock and I can do a deal for any forum members but I dont want to break any rules for advertising - my company is the one selling the kit on Amazon and anyone buying direct from DST (me) would get min 10% off and free next day delivery

My review? It's fantastic!

I set it up to allow all calls through (I don't want people knowing that I filter calls) and as I have 800 free minutes, I've set it to sync with the server every day (which only takes a minute or so anyhow).

Then after a weekend, I went in and flagged the numbers I didn't appreciate, and set them to "not at home" (so they are put on a normal tone as if no-one was home, but your phones don't ring).

Since then I've had 1 call which I didn't like, and prompty zapped the caller....

No issues since them :D

If you want, I can take some screenshots of the control panel - it's really fantastic... I've not even touched the "over the phone" setup, the online setup is so easy to use (even in advanced mode) and painless.

Finally, the company is great as well. I saw in the manual an extension box... but couldn't find it on their site. So I called them and asked where I could buy it - they said it wasn't on sale yet and they were beta-testing it. I got a free sample to "beta test" :D No issues so far!

Now I just need an SD card to enable call recording ;)

My only issue with the whole unit is that the extension box doesn't ring loudly enough(imo) - but as all the other phones ring, it's not a problem.

Verdict? 10/10 - worth every penny!

I don't get nuisance calls - ever. I guess its a BT line thing.

Mind you, I never put my landline number down in any forms or anything.

Our calls were spawned from the fact that my mother was the Italian Consul, and when she moved here, the people in charge of the site were stupid enough to put her home number on the website as a "emergency contact".

There are a few people in that country that still have the number, and they won't take NO...
