iPad purchase advice.

The iPad Air ONLY comes with retina display, it is the current top of the range.

For printing, you should go for a printer that is Airprint compatible. Then you can just send stuff to your printer direct from your iPad wherever you are in the house, simple.

Airpint Printers : About AirPrint

As regards memory, you might think 16Gb is enough, but buy the biggest one you can afford - you will fill it up for sure.

I avoided the 3g network version because of the following reasons

1. You need to spend more ie sign up with a network
2. If you really are somewhere with no wifi, you can bluetooth your phone to the ipad and browse on the ipad using your phones connection. Works fine, I do it in car parks no problem.

Hope that helps.

As ready mentioned a new version should be out soon. I've already started receiving emails about deals and discounts on the existing models, no doubt trying shift the stock before the new one is here.

As for storage it all depends on what you'll use it for. I don't use mine for music storage it's all apps so 16gb is fine

Cheers all. So I'll sum up my needs. I don't 'do' music, not of any kind, other than the occasional Elvis or Eagles CD in the caravan when the telly is bad. (The car radio is almost never on). I take piccies on holidays with a Panny camera and want to store and look at them on something then transfer them to my PC when I get home. It looks like I can get a SD reader to Lightning cable for that. How many 4mb pics fit on 16gb?
I need to keep in touch when away and wifi is probably sufficient with a connection to the phone (if I can figure that out :dk:) when it's not. I don't do games either but the ability to hook up the device to the home telly via a USB or HDMi cable to look at holiday pics would be nice. Can it do that even if the telly is an LG flatscreen?
Presently using an aged Tosh laptop on XP for most of this but that has to go soon and anyways can't take it airside because of its size.

Due a largish pressie from wifie soon and although cost is not a hurdle there's equally no point in paying for extras that won't be used.

So...a 16gb iPad Air2 without 3g looks to be ideal. It wouldn't wifi to my printer because that's not Airprint but as long as it will 'talk to the PC that's not a problem. The PC can talk to the printer.

Does that make sense?

My Xerox printer isn't AirPrint enabled, but I utilise PrintCentralPro (iOS app) to wirelessly print from my iPad.

You might presently believe you have modest requirements for a 16GB iPad, but you will soon fill it with apps you hadn't previously considered as being important. If you can, go for at least 32GB.

Using FaceTime is invaluable for keeping in touch with family far away (think Skype). Web-browsing and emailing are used routinely, and saves booting the computer.

I 'don't do music' on my iPad, either. I use my iPhone for that; which also acts as a audio/video remote for my AppleTV and Squeezebox. With my main computer upstairs, and my AppleTV downstairs, the iPhone is used to stream content from the computer to my AppleTV.

The best camera in the world is the one that you have on you. The iPhone is invaluable in this respect. There have been numerous times when I needed to take unplanned photographs. Sure, I prefer using my Nikon for serious photography, but the iPhone is handy for taking high quality 'snaps'.

Somewhere over 11,000 4Mb images will fit on 16Gb but remember that a fair proportion of the 16Gb will be used by system files and apps so not all will be available to you This link may help:Number of pictures that can be stored on a memory device.

As for connecting your phone and using it to provide a wireless connection, check with your 'phone provider that they 1/ allow tethering and 2/ do not impose extra charges for doing so.

Not sure if Apple provide HDMI output but as mentioned there are cables available that allow connectivity,.

Hope you enjoy your new toy :)

:D. Heading for J Lewis tomorrow for a shuftie. Rumour is that the Air2 will not now be out until Nov?

Do not buy an iPad nor iPhone before 9th September... ...as this is when Apple will likely announce new models.

Yes they are announcing the smart watch I believe

Yes they are announcing the smart watch I believe and the I phone 6 aswell.

Indeed, and I've just seen that on the telly. However its an iPad I'm interested in and Nov seems to be the latest guess for that :dk:.

I bought the first iPad 64g with 3G when they first come out and I am so glad I got it but I never use 3G so I would ditch the 3G but go for the biggest gb you can afford

The major difference between the wifi and 3G models is that the latter has GPS capabilities (even without a sim being added).

So, for example, if you purchased an iPad Mini - and added the TomTom or Garmin app - you have a fully-featured in car navigation system. I use CoPilot Live.

You can buy third-party iPad mounting brackets for your Mercedes.

Sorted. :D. Took Charles advice and plumped for todays model ;). 32gb Air1 with fancy rotating case, all from John Lewis with 3yr guarantee.

So many thanks for all the advice

Now the questions start:

If I'm working on a page -say, for instance- this reply box, how do I minimise the screen so that I can go and look elsewhere for a linky or maybe a pic without shutting the page down and losing it completely? Can't see a minimise button anywhere???:dk:. If there ain't one how do I retain the current page please?

I'm not great with the iPad but I know if you open one app, push the button (bottom centre) and open another app (or apps) each time you re-open preceding apps, they are on the page where you leave them.

Or you can double push the button and it will bring up mini views of open apps and docs which you can scroll along.

EDIT: it is worth doing double push to close down unwanted apps to save battery life, the same you would on an iPhone.

Think of it as "App Switching" rather than minimising.

Click the home button once, this brings you back to the main screen where you can do your other operation, link finding or whatever, once you have it and you want to return to the original app, just click the home button twice quickly, and all your currently open apps will be displayed. Just click on the one you want to go back to, job done.

I'm glad I'm a very long way away. Just imagine if the price gets dropped in the next month, I'd be deid..

Don't want to sound like a nerd but there is also a 'claw' hand gesture to do the same - extended all your fingers to the extremities of the screen and quickly close them all into the middle of the screen for the same effect. Needs a few attempts to get right.

Yep, but I think that has to be turned on in the settings somewhere...?

To return to this. Tried the 'claw' gesture and that sometimes works for me. Maybe that's like SBC Hold where you have to get used to it :dk:.

However even when I get that to work when my page is restored it opens again in the main forum page and not in my replybox...which is where my problem lies. Maybe I should enrol in an iIdiot course. Edinburgh is supposed to get it's new store opening soon. I'll never be away from it's door.

There are some good vids around that show you all the tricks of using the iPad….rather than than have a teenager give you that look of patient suffering.
