Irritating leather rub squeak between the steering wheel and steering column.

I've got an irritating leather rub squeak between the steering wheel and steering column. Difficult to describe but definitely not mechanical. Definitely sounds like the wheel leather hitting the column. Tried a slim piece of cardboard rubbed with Vaseline, but it still persists. Anyone got any ideas ?

Also looking for this part in chrome. The boot trim. Im aware its also the boot opening mechanism. Is the silly 3rd party carbon fiber diffuser easy to have removed. Ugly looking thing.
