Is Dab worth it?

My other half has been on about DAB as her Focus has it and the 06 SL she's waiting to pick up doesn't.

I have no idea about retro fitting it but looks like I'll be working it out haha

I'm 50/50 on that. Mostly listen to radio 2. In the previous car we had DAB and generally I used that, but next time I got in the car I found SWMBO had changed to fm (for no apparent reason!)

My wife does that in her DAB equipped car! She says she doesn't like the sound with DAB. Used it on a long journey recently to listen to Radio 2 and it worked fine the whole way.

My only concern would be about the timing of FM being discontinued. It seems to have been kicked into the long grass at the moment, but it doesn't seem long ago they were targetting 2015 to close down FM.

I use TuneIn Radio app on my iPhone and Bluetooth to my COMAND. It's great!

hey folks

another question, does the Command SatNav allow you to download music files straight from an iPod. I think i’ve read an SD Card also does this but for convience if there is USB it must much easier with that. I’m still learning about digital music having only recently ditched the CD format so to speak.

cheers

Whoops. Apple uses The AAC format as default so it wont download direct to the COMAND HDD from an iPod. I'm not sure if it'll work if you convert your iTunes tracks to MP3.

Think it depends where you live / drive to. Signal around here isn't great for DAB in the car so personally I stick to my iPod

If your favourite station is only available on Medium or Long wave, (I have never found a station on Short Wave) DAB is essential in my view for a good listening experience.

Only ever found three stations on shortwave BBC world service, Radio Moscow and Vatican Radio. All three by accident. Reception was poor though.

The only reason for DAB for me is the lack of Radio 6 on FM. I have DAB in my old S202 but not in my CLK. I wish it had an AUX input for me to add DAB.

I have DAB on my ML but never usd it as it constantly drops out, FM is so much more reliable.

Technically the sound quality on FM is much better than DAB. many of the non BBC stations are only in mono and use a bit rate or quality that is the same as a poor quality MP3. However in a moving car it sounds OK and because there is no hiss or squeaks we tend to think it is better. You can demonstrate this when stationary by switching between the same station on FM and then DAB. If your radio is half decent you should hear a more full sound on FM.
As for all the drop out, a lot of the problem is caused by poor aerials. however Arqiva who own and operate the transmitters are currently installing a lot of new DAB transmitters in an attempt to increase the coverage.
