Drivers door not recognised…

Hi Guys

Picked my car up from the dealers this morning, after a new accelerator pedal & ECU, sorting out a loose connection my car has been deemed fixed.

However, since I have picked it up the drivers door is not recognized by the car, i.e. opening it does not activate the central locking, when opened after unlocking the car the car relocks itself after 30 sec and the alarm goes on, will not lock itself after passing 9mph etc etc.

I have phoned the dealer and moaned about it being more than a coincidence etc.. and will have to take it back in on Monday.

Any ideas what it could be? The strike pin is springing fine… A door control module was mentioned any idea of the cost.

TIA

Jacob

Sounds like more "loose connections" on the ECU. Make them prove that it is not before you shell out more money mate.

Been in to the dealer this morning, was told there was no fault.

No fault codes showing, a master reset was carried out and I was told it was cured...it was not. I clearly demonstrated all the faults and the only thing they can do is 'book it in and order a new door control module'.

They would not entertain the notion that I handed the car in without this problem and it came back with it!!! They said the ECU work had nothing to do with the doors which were controlled by the rear SAM module, is this correct? even if it is can all the ECU fiddling have caused this?

What is my legal position, I phoned them within hours of picking the car up to report the fault??

All in all very pi$$ed off this morning wasted 1 hour 20 mins at the dealer:mad:

Did they check the door contasct switch?

In what respect Ollie? The pin is springing, where is the contact switch?

If you can unlock the driver door only with the key and the rest of the doors remain locked, that may be the key programming. I had this set up on my E class and I presume this choice is still valid on newer cars. If you press the unlock button once it ulocks the driver door only press the button again and all other doors unlock.

Thanks Geoff.

The key opens and unlocks everything. The problem is most definately that the car is not recognising the drivers door being opened.

The problem with modern dealers (and Mercedes are not the only manufacture with this issue) is they are no longer mechanics. They are simply fitters.

If a computer cannot diagnose the problem the only fall back they have is replacement parts at your expense. The ability to diagnose problems seems to have been lost. Of course the modern electronics of cars are at least partially responsible for this, but I can't help feeling there is more to it than that.

It's why I prefer a good independent that has the ability to think beyond the manual.

Thanks Mudster,

I thought I had a good indie that could 'think beyond the manual' but they replaced a MAS that did not need replacing. The EML came on and they immidiately said MAS, didn't even open the bonnet. When the light came on again they said they are waiting for more information on an oil contamination issue from MB and they couldn't help, can I leave the car with them.. I was at the end of my tether so went to a dealer who after inspection diagnosed a split kompressor hose. It has been fine since.

Not been back to the indie since. I do take your point though and it is very valid. They did offer to remove the door trim and inspect but I couldn't leave the car with them so they have booked me a courtesy car.

My cheif concern is my legal position with regards to this repair.

I left the car with them to fix an ECU issue (ECU was replaced but was still faulty) it came fixed (as far as I can tell) but there was this problem nwith the doors that I noticed straight away.

I am not best pleased I tell you:devil::devil:

Horses for courses, but would your good old fashioned independant have all the latest flash upgrades that are a 'must' for our modern vehicles, would they install them free of charge? Could they afford to keep their electricians up todate on all the very latest options that are installed in our cars?

Point taken, unfortunately none of the three main dealers I've used had the ability to do even the basic jobs right. Every time without fail I've had to get them to reset the service indicator on the dash, I just lost confidence in them altogether.

My car however goes to an SEC specialist, He knows this model inside out and gets straight to the root of any problem.

I guess it may be more a symptom of overcomplicated cars.

Still I find it very frustrating that many of these establishments don't even try to find the root of a problem before advising expensive replacement parts.

I guess this is the grumpy old man part of me emerging:)

I think it also only fair to point out that our modern cars no doubt contain electronic gizzmo's that would test the most qualified experts. I suspect in some circumstances the cheapest option is to replace, rather than even attempt a repair.

I was reading somewhere that on the old 1950's Pullman there were only a very few technicians that were allowed to work on them?

Hi all,

Car was recently in for a new ECU, when that didn't fix the problem it went back in when a 'loose connection was discovered near the ECU'.

Car was collected and I immidiately noticed that the drivers door was not being recognised. opening internally would not activate central locking etc etc. I immidiately made them aware of this fault but diagnosis showed nothing.

It went back in today, and apparently it was a failed microswitch in the door. Goodwill reduced the cost to £133!

Is this a coincidence or can messing with the ECU have caused this. Furthermore the car went in without the problem and came out with it!! what is my legal position?

Thanks.

Threads merged as this is the same question?????

WHY?????????

Because the thread digressed and now I know the cause I'm asking a specific question.

Sometimes to get a response one needs to start afresh!

I'm going to pick the car up in 20mins and wanted some info prior.

We do not encourage repeat threads, sorry. This is not the way to get a quick response, as people will obviously think they have seen the question before - and ignore it.

Then stop them hijacking my thread:(:(

Needed some expert advice:(
