Most of the MBs I see for sale are automatics.

Didn't they make any manual ones?

A lot of newish second hand cars come from MB themselves as they get rid of their company cars after a few months and autos have a better residual price.

oi mine is a manual. had two autos and the troubles were horrendous, +cost of fixing them was just rubbish.
maf, ecu, oil leaks, limp mode, jerking, valeo rad

You tend to find most Mercs Autos and most like for like BM's manuals

Merc Autos tend to be quicker / smoother as Merc manuals a bit iffy. The foot brake with a manual will also take some getting use to.

If its a manual it tends to be worth less, especially if a E class type car.

Drive an Auto and you will wonder why you have a manual. Especially in traffic.

Ok Autos can have probems but as a family of auto driving cars and all sorts of makes we have only had my dads only W124 230TE that went into limp mode and was an easy fix.

What merc are you looking at?

Mines a manual :D And that was second hand (or sixth, I forget). I am tempted to get an auto for the next Merc I get though.

My first W211 E270 was a manual.

Really? When recently researching this, everything seemed to point to the fact that the W211 was only ever offered in E220 guise with a manual gearbox. The E270 and E320 had a 7G-Tronic automatic gearbox fitted as standard, with no manual option. Tell us more about this manual E270...

On 220 and 270 auto was an option, 320 saw it as standard.

Hrm. That doesn't seem to match with the brochure I saw (guy at MB brentford showed me old sales brochures, he was really cool). Perhaps I'm mixing it up with the 280?

Manuals are available, but nearly everyone expects an MB to be automatic, hence manuals can be hard to sell on, therefore better not to buy one in the first place unless you really, really need a manual. A & B class may be the exceptions to this rule.

Probably given that they wouldn't have a 270 brochure as it was deleted in 2006, also the 270 never had 7-gtronic.

better not buy one unless you really need and have the money to fix one.
just read all the gearbox problems on here, and why oh why is there a problem with the footbrake?
On a hill start, it is released with your hand like a conventional hand brake.
to stop, you shove it in neutral and depress with foot.
how hard is that?

I was in a W204 manual, and its got a hill hold thats activated like the SBC-H on the W211, although this is NOT an SBC equipped car!!

Manual gearboxes do give less trouble, but a merc auto can clear 200k easily. Didn't olly mention an E270cdi auto with 470k on the clock still going strong. If you look after an auto it will be okay, usually.

Although the auto box is obviously more complicated are they really going wrong that much given that nearly all of the cars on here are auto. Most of the faults are not particularly expensive to fix in reality.

Having had a different manual car with exactly the same parking brake I concur it's not a problem in use. Although having 3 full length legs helps..;)

Interesting about autos. I thought most cars on the road were manuals, so maybe it's that most MBs on the road are auto then.
