Is it me or all 2nd hand MB's automatics?

well valeo faults for one are plenty.
then there is the ecu oil leak, then the numerous recalls. A manual box can clear galactic miles as well. it does not require any maintenance except the odd oil change .
remember the 70's w123 cars with manuals still running around in africa and asia

Speaking to lady at the stealership recently who told me over 90% of all new sales are auto's. ('Don't buy a manual - you'll struggle when it comes to sell' is also what she said.)

Autotrader lists 15,860 second hand auto's out of 18,700 for sale which equates to just 15% manual boxes.

Interesting about autos. I thought most cars on the road were manuals, so maybe it's that most MBs on the road are auto then.

most MB's are autos. i think this is the main reason BMW sells more than them as they do not give the manual option in many of their cars.
e.g any engine over 3.0litres may never have a manual.
even aston with a 6.0v12 still has a manual

True, but some of us get lazy and are willing to take on the higher risk of failure.

Budget for a new gearbox or a Tier one warranty and your fine.

.

she was just hoping to entice you into one so that you will be charged more when it goes kaput or needs servicing:bannana:

To be honest mate just try both, as i did and choose which to prefer. much to do with your driving style. they are both nice and the manual is notchy but that is why i like it and i prefer the corvette box, to the imprezza box because the corvette, you can actually hear the box sliding into the gates but in the subaru it is a short shift.
I like to feel i have done some work in driving and the notchy boxes i love. makes me feel part of the car and the clunks make me feel i have done something.

just get a proper auto as some tend to have a comittee meeting before deciding they have been into drive and try to move

too quick to shoot donza down were you?

Nope. I didn't "shoot" anyone down. I was simply pretty sure in my facts, since I've spent the last few weeks looking over many W211's.

As Dieselman pointed out, I also got it wrong (I confused the two mid-sized engines - the E280cdi does come with 7G-Tronic as standard).

*shrug*. bog off. :bannana:   :D

Diesalman,

I think I have my numbers wrong it was an F reg 230TE what ever number that is...sorry

..............I've only got one right leg so auto is ideally suited for me.

That would make it a W124 with a regular hydraulic box. I was curious as to how that could create a limp home failure as it has no interaction with the engine.
What exactly happened.?

Hello

It was my dads and from memory is went into some sort of saftey mode? would not go into the higher gears as if stuck in 2nd?

Thats the only fault we have known in all the autos we have had.

ooh and the fix was quick...what ever it was

When I was looking for my current car, every decent looking W202 was a bloody manual ;)

I was looking for a auto box E-class.. but ended up getting a manual C-class.. wasnt really bothered at the end of the day.. foot brake and hand release is easy to use, my manual box is suprisingly smooth, the lift up reverse is a little notchy.

This has been discussed before on another thread my last Merc was an auto and the one I have now is a manual and as some of the guys say (no problems).
Auto's are a pain in the ar=e but as has been said it is all according if you want a car that you have to drive or just sit there and let the gearbox do the changing for you (NOT DRIVING) as I have said before I don't want my car changing gear when the gearbox thinks it should which with an auto is always to early.
My car is far better on fuel than an auto and a pleasure to drive I have just replaced the oil which was a very easy operation and I know it is not going to mess my ECU up plus going into sleep mode so it has to be towed to the garage plus all the other problems a lot get.
As regards hill starts also no problems this is why manuals get a bad name because forums like this slag them off driving a car is not about speed and going round bends on two wheels etc it is also about changing gear at the right time and using the correct gear

Hrm. That doesn't seem to match with the brochure I saw (guy at MB brentford showed me old sales brochures, he was really cool). Perhaps I'm mixing it up with the 280?
Hi Simon,
Just to clarify what has been said

Options for the E-270CDI

Option number 423
5-speed automatic transmission with Tipfunction and Speedtronic cruise control = £1,450.00

Option number 424
6-speed manual Sequentronic gearbox with Speedtronic cruise control = £650.00

Regards
John

good and they have less co2 as well. (even though i do not care), but with the new bands coming up , you pay less in RFL

Despite everyones opinion, it does not alter the fact that the majority of people expect an auto MB and manuals are priced down accordingly, or impossible to sell on.

Whats the Sequentronic box like. Is it a CVT or an automated manual. Its cheaper and might be good.
