Is it normal for “new” engine mounts and transmission mounts to look like this?

2x E350 CDI Sport W212s... for a bit
Hi,

Just received these from AUTODOC, they look filthy and used, I guess reconditioned… They were not sold as reconditioned… Is this what they all look like?

I saw a video of a guy on YouTube who did the swap on his facelift W212, and the engine mounts look the same, i.e. has the soot and the dirt inside. I don’t think he changed the transmission mount so I didn’t get to see that, but I’ll give it a Google

Is this normal, are they really new - did yours look like this?

Cheers,

Ed

I find it hard to accept that newly manufactured parts would look like that.

Have you asked the supplier for an explanation? The last reconditioned part I bought was an Alternator and it looked like new.

I've sent a message to Autodoc, yes, but they're in Berlin so I am not expecting a super speedy resolution, unfortunately.

Cheers,

Ed

Emails travel quickly these days ;)

Hopefully you will get a quick response, I used them once and had good and speedy good communications :)

I have all new Lemforder mounts waiting on the shelf. They look nothing like yours, mine are mint clean.

Good to know, thanks!

Send them back

Yes, it's looking that way, isn't it!

Haha, I just meant that I can't simply call them up, and I need to wait for them to reply before I can send pics, and so on :p

Edit: Emailed Autodoc directly with the pics attached!

I will say, even in the stock pictures, they look (a bit) dirty

Also if you see this video, at 1 min in, this guys mounts look 'sooty' on the inside too. In fact you can see it even in the thumbnail for the video...

I can't explain away the brown staining on the gearbox mount though...!

It's not some sort of anti-corrosion coating?

They look pretty much normal to me. That’s not dirt on the engine mounts it’s rubber compound. The gearbox mount doesn’t look much different to the others I’ve seen either tbh?

Yes I have got engine and gearbox mounts from both MB directly and Autodoc (Lemförder) .. they all looked like this. Especially the gearbox mount. I’d say it’s normal.

Read the casting marks , you can work out exactly when they were made. Looks like 2016 to me , cant quite see the month on the cast dial from the photos.
My engine mounts (different type) and gearbox mount from Lemforder supplied by Autodoc a while back were 100% shiny and new.

Ah, quite the debate I see! :p

They’re engine and gearbox mounts, they’re designed to be functional - you don’t see them once fitted, the appearance isn’t really important.

I can’t really see much wrong from the photos, what you think is dirt looks like rubber compound and/or bonding adhesive from manufacturing.

Nobody re-manufactures these, they are new 100%.

The rubber looks new, and I wouldn't worry about the stains.

But what is a cause for concern is that some of the alloy ribs seem to have wear and tear marks on them? One mount may have fallen out of the box and hit the floor, but there are too many of them. Not sure what the explanation is though - are they refurbished? You would have thought that if they were refurbished by Lemforder, this would be mentioned on the box.

E.g.:

The external oxidisation is not a problem, especially for an item that has been in storage on a shelf for the past 4 years.

But the worn area seems shiny and new... and not 4 years old. I would say it is more consistent with someone manipulating it very recently.

Perhaps it happened when the item was being refurbished? Or it's a return - someone tries fitting it in their car but sent it back?

Perhaps someone with similar Lemforder mounts (off the car...) can confirm if the rubber bit is supposed to have the Lemforder log or markings as well? The rubber on the mounts in the photo has no markings.
