Any harm in mixing 2 brands of oil both 5/40 mb 229.51.

No harm and it wouldn't matter much if they weren't the same viscosity.

Very few engines receive oil changes of the same brand throughout their life so some degree of mixing is always going on with the residual oil.

Thanks I have 5 ltrs sitting and having trouble buying same brand so will just get one other brands same spec.

Viscosity tends to be more of an issue when temperatures are more extreme - wouldn't really matter in the UK.

Oil types are designed to be interchangeable, as long as they meet the same MB Spec Sheet.

The car manufacturer expects that most people won't even know what brand of oil the dealer used during the last service. If drivers need to top-up, they can buy any oil with the correct MB Spec Sheet and just add it to the engine.

This is how it's designed to work.

Cheers then as long as I buy mb 229-51 — 5-40 for.
M642 V6 DIESEL ENGINE.
I will be fine

Don’t you need 5w30

Thanks Renault12ts on reading your link I see there’s not much difference and considering I change every 5-6000 mls the think the
5 W 40 will be fine. and I have now learnt the W stands for winter.
