Is the dealer pulling a fast one?

Hi all, a couple of weeks into ownership of my 2003 E270cdi, I experienced occasional and very mild juddering (for about a second) at low revs, I struggled to replicate the issue every time. Other than the very mild occasional judder, I have not experienced any odd vibrations, clonks or jerks. The coolant was on MAX and didn't look like any had escaped or leaked.

I have taken the car back to the dealer fearing the dreaded Valeo issue that I knew nothing about until after I'd bought the car and joined this forum, doh!

The dealer recons that they have found no coolant in the ATF after draining the radiator and ATF, they have put the minor juddering down to the gearbox oil not being changed 15000 miles ago at its 40000 mile service, they said the ATF was very black and the new ATF has sorted it.

I haven't yet collected the car.........does their explanation sound plausible?

If I have got away with it, I think I am going to change the radiator, what would I need to budget for a replacement?

The radiator may have been changed already. If it has it should be in the car's service history :dk: If the problem was minor then its possible a change of ATF was all that was required. Ask how they tested for glycol in the ATF ---- its a specific chemical test-- not all dealers are equipped to do it.

Is this an MB dealer or other garage?

The Fiat / Alfa main dealer shipped the car off to a local MB specialist, he used to work for MB and now runs his own garage, I have spoken to him directly and he seemed very sincere and knowledgeable and assured me he had tested the ATF for Glycol with the correct procedure.

I can't answer your question re the Valeo radiator, but if you are asking if it is sensible that the judder was caused by an overdue ATF change, then the answer is yes...

I suspect the judder will come back at some point. The new ATF is just covering the issue.

If the judder does come back, is the next course of action to replace the TC?

Cheers,

Andrew.

Yes. There is also a valve in the valve body that wears and causes this fault too.
