Is this a Wheel Bearing Problem?

Hi guys,

I've noticed that when taking a tight left turn there is a knock from somewhere up front (for some reason I think it's the front left). Imagine pulling into a parking space or turning into a narrow road at a slow speed.

Also, when driving on the motorway, I notice at 65+mph I get a droning/vibrating kind of sound coming from the front I believe. If I turn the wheel slightly to the left it stops.

Does this sound like a wheel bearing could be in need of replacing?

The car is a W204 estate CDI220 Sport.

Hope to hear.

What is MY wife doing in YOUR car?

Hopefully someone will be along soon to say it is likely be 'this' bush or joint.

There is an old fashioned but easy way to check if it is a wheel bearing; it needs two people though.
Safely raise and support one corner of the car so that the wheel can spin freely. Firmly grab the top and bottom of the tyre and see if it rocks back and forth (pull the top whilst pushing the bottom and vice versa). If there is some play/movement, have the second person apply the brake pedal. If the play/movement stops, it is the wheel bearing but if the movement remains with the brakes applied, it isn't that wheel bearing but likely a bushing or fitting.
Repeat as necessary.

Could be a Ball joint, or wheel bearing. Droning could also be a out of shape tyre, sometime i get a droning from the nearside but once i tell the wife to be quiet it stops lol

Is it a single knock when you turn, or a continuing knocking? What mileage has the car covered?

Loving the comedy guys :)

I'll give the old schoolethod a go when I have a spare set of hands around.

Hi there, it's a single knock. The mileage is around 55600. It's an '09 plate in case I haven't disclosed it anywhere.

I have a used car warranty (warranty direct) which covers wear and tear. I can nominate a garage and pay, then reclaim or give it to their approved garage which they will pay direct. However if they give it to some £200/h garage and it turns out not to be covered in some way I'll be annoyed when the Indy I've used is £70/h!

Any further ideas??

Ok, it's not a wheel bearing.

Had it checked out after booking it in via the warranty company. They weren't the best garage as they seemed to stop looking after they found out it wasn't a wheel bearing. They also couldn't replicate the knocking when turning left. Even though it does it most of the time!

The droning noise happens at low speed every now and then also now. Like when in a car park. As well as on the motorway. But only when you move the wheel to the right slightly. Like when you are adjusting your position in your lane. Again it is intermittent and won't do it all the time. I just drove I the motor way it it dos it quite a bit.

I'm gonna call the warranty company and see if they have another garage on their books or I may have to take it to an Indy.

It could be from the steering rack. They have a tendency to knock a little. The good news is that its adjustable.

That is good news. I am a bit ore concerned about this droning noise I am getting intermittently however. It is hard to describe but it is like a droning noise. You can almost feel it through the steering wheel, as it's connected to turning the wheel to the right.

Thing is I can't replicate it all the time. It made the noise on the way up the motorway. On the way home it didn't. It's usually on the way home I hear it. Going to have to book it in with another garage I guess.

If the droning only happens as you turn the wheel, it could be the power steering pump running dry, or just clapped..

Are the tyres feathered?

I know they are quite worn. Still legal etc. I plan to replace them in the coming week. I'll check for uneven wear. I think that's what you mean?

I'll give this a look tomorrow, thanks for the idea.
