Is this normal when engaging reverse?

In my previous W205 (2015 SE) engaging the reverse gear was quick quick and flawless. All it needed is a light touch of the break pedal and flick the lever.

However in my newer W205 (2017 Sport) engaging the reverse is a pain and fails 50% of the time on first try. A message comes up to say press the break pedal firmly before engaging reverse. Which is a damn pain especially when you want to manouver quickly.

Is this something normal or is it some sort of fault (poor contact, etc)?

No, this is not normal. If the car was registered in 2017 then it should still be under warranty, so get it checked out by your Mercedes main dealer. Please remember to let us know the diagnosis and fix to help other members in future.

This has been the case for others also. It happened to me when first getting my W213 coming from a W205, but I put it down to lack of effort from myself. I guess some selectors need more of a positive action than others. Get it checked out if you aren’t satisfied though.

Reluctant Reverse Selection!

Still happens to me even now with 9 months of ownership, plus it draws so much attention in the E63 when the exhaust is in powerful mode.
A couple of cracks and bangs emerge as you accidentally give it 3.5k revs, then the heads turn. God knows when they're saying/thinking :D

Sounds like the brake lights switch is a little insensitive. Try a new one.

High engine revs are probably the problem ,, and your suppressing this by holding it on the brake .
You misunderstand i think.
Pressing up on on selector doesn't engage reverse, I assume like others, I didn't use enough effort. I don't check that reverse was selected, and begin my reversing manoeuvre by applying some throttle.
To be fair, I have the same issue on my wife's A class, except not engaging reverse means my mistake is so much more discreet than when in the E63.

I reported the exact same issue when my W213 had its first service last November. The issue is still present over a year later. MB fobbed me off with the pedal pressure response but when I asked why I had not had the issue with the previous 2 cars and when pressing the brake pedal in this car to select Drive always worked, they shrugged it off. The only difference I could think of was the newer 9G box in the W213. I wouldn't be surprised if a software update is pushed out quietly at some point.
