Thanks all... That was the way that I was leaning to think also.
I am considering purchasing this car, do you think it should affect my decision the fact that is is pre-facelift... It is a very clean car in and out. I may change the wheels, grill and maybe add one of the cheap spoilers from ebay also.
I'll use this as my introduction to you all as well.. I guess if I purchase this car I may visit this forum quite a bit more.
My understanding is that early W203 (this model's designation) were quite temperamental, though the general reliability and rust issues have settled around 2002.
The facelift has good built quality and some newer features (mainly re-designed dashboard and console but also more subtle ones such as impro9ved suspension etc), however they command a higher price.
If you can stretch to buying a 2004 onwards post facelift, I suggest that you at least try to get a 2002 or later model, and check carefully for rust.

The electrics on the early ones were suspect. Ours had loads of problems - ignition, instrument display, alarm, climate and others I have forgotten. Try to go for a facelift one - they were much better
The car is a 2004 model. I knew that was the year that the face lift model came out hence why I was a little unsure.
I have decided against buying the car.. after a bit more investigation I think that I will go for an 05 or 06 model. I live in London so have been keeping an eye on car giant. Hopefully a suitable one will come up soon. Budget 7-8k... They were looking 6,450 for the car in the pics.. 84k miles, 220cdi classic se. very clean and good driving car though I must say!
