Ive noticed many post regarding temperatures & MPG being low so whilst the car was at the dealer having 2 Conti 5's fitted i got them to check the thermostat as the temperature was hovering around 65-70 most of the time & MPG noticeably low, dealer called me yesterday to confirm it needs a new one! the best part of it which surprised me is Warranty Wise is taking care of the bill :thumb:.

Booked in next thur.

Allowed time: 1.7hrs
Thermostat : £45 + Antifreeze

Ive just fitted a new stat and my temp hovers around 70, if i drive the car hard for a minute or so at the 70 point, it will reach about 80-85 and stay there.

Was struggling to get to 50 degrees whilst driving previously.

Could just be the cold weather.

Just re-read your post, If warranty is covering it, by all means. Get it done !

Did you fit a genuine one?

No, but the one that came off the car wasnt genuine either, in fact it was the same brand as the new one i bought, only difference, the one that was removed had a genuine merc sensor in it.

Just replaced mine with an ECP one, plus a new MB sensor.

It was stuggling to reach 70º - 75º before, but now warms up a lot quicker and was running at around 80º after the replacement, so I also blanked off the bonnet grille which has upped it by another 2º - 3º. The heater is fantastic now :bannana:

Replaced mine to before temp around 60 now 80-90
Big improvement on how engine sounds and big increase in mpg too

Replaced mine with a OEM, heats up to 80-85c fine.

Longer runs will take it to 90-95c.

Hi , My C220CDi is having the same problems- takes ages to reach any real temperature. I'll be going to ECP today for new thermosat. Should I fit a new temperature sensor as well ? The electronic temp gauge does work though. Thanks

I replaced my thermostat in the summer as it had to come out to properly flush the coolant. Nothing wrong with the old one, but while it was out it made sense to change as preventative maintenance. Genuine MB part is not cheap though at £36.

I replaced the temperature sensor in mine while doing the stat, as it's in the same housing, but the reading was the same with the old one as the new.

I also replaced the short by-pass tube, located between the bottom of the stat housing and the engine block, but I don't know if the C220 is the same stat layout as the C270. Should yours be the same, the by-pass tube is only available from a main MB dealer, the part number is MA611 203 01 08 (£5:39)

Don't forget to use the ECP 'Reserve & Collect' online option to qualify for the club discount. Enter MBClub30 at the checkout.
Shop price £34:70 - Discount price £24:30 (MB Genuine Stat £42:00)

If you need instructions on changing the stat there's a good write up here, if same as C270 Mercedes-Benz Owners' Forums - View Single Post - Basic How-to-change a thermostat (C270CDi W203)

So, the old one was probably not faulty as such, it's just how these copy parts are...

There is so much bull put about re genuine parts..
Before i had a Mercedes I NEVER replaced thermostats, filters oils and ATF with "OEM" and now all of a sudden its sacreligeous to dare to use anything else...

My Discs and pads are NOT MB and they are far better and in my opinion made to a far higher standard..
No rust at all on any of the discs after 23,000 miles and far less dust than standard pads.

My Thermostat is NOT MB and works absolutely fine and up to the correct temperature..
Re Thermostats.. I am on my 2nd C270 cdi and its the second time I have had to replace the ever so super OEM thermostat at around 50k miles..

Read the forums and you will discover that OEM isnt always the best..
Dont get me wrong I would never use cheap cr*p on my car but replacements of a decent quality are fine.

However the previous posters doesn't, even from new.
What's more interesting is that it seems to perform the same as the one he took out, which was the same brand.

Got car back this morning & everything working as it should, didnt take long to get up to temp..

Hi only had my C Class classic 220cdi a week and have already noticed how long it takes to get up to operating temp and as a result how long I have to wait for any meaningful heat in the cabin. Takes 12/15 miles and 20 mins to get to 80 deg. Is that normal? Bit scared to open the throttle very much till it gets up to that temp so perhaps I should have the thermostat checked?

Sounds like its on its way, id get a new one fitted especially as it takes ages to get to just 80.

Hey Evdok, just had a shufy through your album - very nice mate. Your MB looks absolutely pristine especially those wheels. you obviously don't have kerbs where you live! lol

Not an MB, but I have noticed my RRS takes ages to get to normal operating temperature and the MPG is quite low. Is this a sign of a failing thermostat ?

Most likely, yes. Diesels do take longer to warm up though. What sort of mileage do you have to cover before it's up to temperature?

Cheers mcevoyd my moto is "look after your car & it will look after you" wheels are getting a bit tired now & one has two small curbing's, £160 i can get them like new again but to be honest im constantly thinking about a W212 350cdi:wallbash: & at the same time thinking theres nothing wrong with what i have:dk:
