Saw an old E-class yesterday, could not get over how tiny it was! OK, I’m used to seeing my neighbour's MGBGT alongside current cars, but I didn’t expect this for the E.

I was driving in traffic behind a Series III Jaguar XJ6 a couple of weeks ago that had a fairly recent VW Golf in the lane to its right.

The Jaguar was always deemed to be a "large" saloon whereas the Golf is marketed as a "compact" family hatchback. The Jaguar was a low-slung car even when new and its springs had probably tired and sunk in the last 35 years but not only was the Golf much taller it was also about the same width as the Jag.

I also saw a Ford Capri Mark 3 in traffic recently and from the rear it looked tiny next to all the modern cars around it.

Car design has come a long way.

When you see a large SUV (eg Q7) dwarf a VW campervan - it just looks wrong!

The wider the car, the narrower the road is - where's the fun in that?

I went to my GP about my spiralling weight problem.
He asked what I normally eat and drink and came to the conclusion that the problem was I only had one ar$hole. :(

Big style! Ran a Mk4 VW golf and a friend has had a constant stream of golfs and polos as demos/reps...as each year went by the polo seemed to dwarf my golf when parked side by side. He parked a new Tiguan next to it a month or two ago and it was insane!
Huge unnecessary beast that will only do the school run down narrow streets :wallbash:

I saw an old 930 911 and it was utterly dwarfed by the cars around it.

I can't believe how small it looked.

Even at work, I often see an E39 5 Series near an F10 5 Series (so 2 generations apart) and the F10 makes the E39 look tiny. The newer 3s are bigger than the older 5s. Probably close to the old E32 7s.

I read somewhere that UK car parking space sizes are based on the size of 1960's cars

Not far off, I also believe it's a measurement used to get planning permission for shopping centers/infrastructure projects where 'X' amount of parking places are a requirement for getting the plans through. The fact that the spaces are sized for cars not built since 1970 does not seem to matter one jot...

Cars have grown in size due to the safety requirements put upon manufacturers.

I tend to agree that safety equipment has added... but I would say it’s more towards comfort and space for people inside whilst providing chassis that can be used on multiple platforms.

When I was 21 I ran about in 95 FTO and my friend in an integra...vast majority you ever seen written off badly, the driver walked away. Same as pedestrians being hit by them. They had zero safety features lol (I know it doesn’t help my point they were both pretty big coupes, but 90s cars were almost safer than a lot of new ones despite ncap)

I used to work for a company where the CEO was a petrol head.

He told me he understood that an actual XJ (can't remember what vintage) was the size used for parking spaces.

I think it's more about space and comfort also on the size of cars although if they are larger, you can fit more safety within them.

I can fit in a lot of cars but there are very few I am comfortable driving.

Wasn't a problem in my younger years but is increasingly becoming so.

The S Class platform is pretty much a minimum now although a 213 E might work as that is well beyond what my 211 was size-wise.

W205 is same size as W210, new A-Class saloon:

Mercedes A35 Sedan

Same size as W202 (but wider)
