..it's the way that they do it!
My wife's car is in for service and she has nicked my S Class so I have an A160 CDI auto till Monday. I did a regular 150mile A road journey which I normally use the S for and got to thinking...
The journey time was the same, the space inside the car is similar and both keep me safe, warm and dry. Strangley the fuel used for the journey is not much different.
When you squeeze the throttle in the A Class the noise levels increase and not much else happens.
Do the same in the S and the horizon suddenly gets closer and very little else changes.
I guess 'effortless' is the way the S does things:D
So what is it about the way your Mercedes does things that endears you to the car?

Journey times are more to do with traffic and driving style than the vehicle itself, very few people corner on the doorhandles and drive a Vmax all the time, yet most cars will run 100mph andgo round bends quite well.

I used the Volvo to go to manchester and back last week, no different time wise than the E, despite lots less power. Used more fuel but then it's petrol. Missed the automatic gearbox but only on the last mile of shuffle off the motorway, and it felt small (no footrest either).

Still for a car that costs about as much new as I paid for a 3 yr old it's impressive enough. And it had better headlights (not any more...)

It goes to show how for everyday driving the smaller engined variants make good sense - yes they use as much fuel when thrashed but cruising you don't need the power - it was happy to cruise at 65-75 all the way there (friends parents on board) and more normal speeds all the way back.

C200, E220, A160, S320. They all make perfect sense!

Well having just used my S500L after a long break, I can say with ease, that no other car has even come close-not the E-class, C-class or 3-series, 5 series etc.

Like I said on my previous thread, its like you hover around everywhere.

Love it

I like the comfort and the ability to drive the car for 10hrs and get out without any difficulty. Its also a very refined car (both road noise and engine noise) and that tends to come with larger cars only. + its RWD, and that makes a huge difference.

Comfort, style, durability, presence, quietness of operation, usefulness, economy(ish) Achieving and owning a dream. Next dream? An S Class, have to be a mature one of moderature cost. Move away from the marque. I think not.

How was the MPG? The recent courtesy A class i had was very poor ( A180 CDI)

Effortless is also my word for it.

I've never braked hard and wished my brakes were better.
I've never accellerated hard and thought "I need a bigger engine"
I've never cornered hard and thought "that needs more grip"
I've never carried passengers and thought "they need more space or comfort"
I've never turned the radio on and thought "that needs better speakers"
I've never parked anywhere and been ashamed of my car
I've never asked the car to do anything and been disappointed.
I've never done a long journey and wished the drivers seat was better.
I've never thought "this car is too noisy"
I've never thought "I'll never have another one of these"

I've never done any of the above, since I bought my 1st Mercedes. I'm now on my 5th (and still own my 3rd and 4th).

Prior to buying Mercedes cars, I thought some or all of the above above every car I had. Not just with Renaults, Fiats and Fords, but with "premium" brands like Audis, Volvos, and BMWs too.

As i've said before , it's the noise of mine that does it for me ...

6 months on and it still makes me (literally) laugh out loud every time i stamp on the gas ...

It's a nice effortless drive too ...

On this cold journey the A160 CDI did 49mpg. I normally get about 45 in the S, but with a best of 53mpg for the same route.
Oh! And I'm now ready to get back in the S! :o

I quite understand what you are saying, its the same for me too.

Have you ever tried putting two 6ft blokes in the back of a BMW M3 convertible?

Forget adjustable lumbar support for the driver - that's a pair of knees!

It's my comfort too........

:D

For 4 6 foot adults to fit comfortably a C class, 3 series etc size car is too small. You really need an E class, 5 series sized car for long distance touring comfort.
