As some of you may know my car is currently in the dealer due to an intermittant accellerator problem. Mobilolife have already replaced the pedal assembly to no avail and now the dealer is saying it must be the ECU!

Obviously not very happy and have asked that mercedes be consulted as the car is only 10 months out of warranty with a FMBSH.

If the replacement ECU does not fix the problem, will they still charge you for it? It might be worth checking that replacing it WILL definately fix the problem before forking out.

Sounds like the dealer is guessing, which shouldn't be the case. You could try another dealer or independent.

Or, find someone with the same car, borrow their ECU, plug it in & see if that cures it.

I used to know people that when they needed expensive parts, they would go and hire one the same, and swap the bits over

MB not interested as the car is 46 months old and has 87k

What is standard policy on fitting parts that do not cure the problem the dealer is not being very transparent should we say.

Does the car have a complete MB service history? If so I would ask them to take it up with HQ regarding some kind of good-will gesture.

I'm being quite serious here when I say that this is a sale of goods/statutory rights issue.

They would not advertise that their ECUs break after 46 months. The ECU should last the lifetime of the vehicle or somewhere close, it is a very rare failure and is almost definitely a manufacturing defect of some kind, this is not wear-and-tear.

Speak to BBA Reman about the likelyhood of repair.

Hello,

Just keep the S class until they are sure the problem is 100% fixed at no charge to you

What do you mean at no charge to me? for the parts? labour? Hire car?

All three?

It might be the old "oil in the ECU" trick in which case you can double up the cost of repairs.

Update,

Spoken to Mercedes Customer Service and they will speak to the dealer about a contribution towards the repair, he also said that they should have fitted an ECU from another vehicle first to confirm that is the fault.

We'll see what transpires, hopefully action will back up the talk.

No it's not this Miro, I have 271 engine not the 111.

Thanks though.

they should be able to use a decent diagnostics program which tells them the exact fault with the car. should be NO guessing involved.

It doesen't work like that. Firstly the car has to be faulty at the time, then the diag reports the indicated faults and effect. It's then a process of testing to find the cause.

Ohhhh I wish it worked like that............

This sounds a lot better!

How should it work then Ollie, would you be recommending a replacement ECU?

Thing is testing an ECU from another car would be a few hours of labour anyway...

An ECU from another car would not even start it. It needs speciic coding for that vehicle and thet vehicle only:eek:

I was refering to zac's comment about decent diagnostic equipment and just being able to "plug it in and it tells you whats wrong with it".

Ohh i wish it worked like that. :p

I would go with the ECU being faulty too. If everyting else has been checked the last resort is Engine Control Unit.

Thanks Ollie for that, makes me feel better.

Lets hope MB come up with a generous contribution or even dare I say it, pay for the lot:crazy::D

I'm not holding out much hope.

enjoying the S Class though it must be said;)
