What does it say to you?

It says to me that maybe on this forum that football isn’t the be all and end all.
Fair enough. But I’d rather have my mouth stitched closed and repeatedly vomit, than watch cricket personally. But I keep my opinions to myself and allow others to like what they like without criticising it. Which I just did!

I like sport on tv but I cannot comment on any of them because I know nothing about them.

That there's not much interest I guess.

The football season is well underway so it can't be quiet for that reason.

Never mind, Rugby 6 nations starts in a few months :)[/

I don’t watch Rugby or Cricket, both perceived as Middle Class sports, maybe it’s a class thing, but I’m not opening that can of worms.

Middle class?

Ah, you are thinking of England.

Fair point. Cricket isn’t played in Scotland, certainly not in inner city Glasgow where I grew up. Rugby is popular in the Borders, Hawick etc,

Wouldn’t you say both are elite sports south of the border though?

In England maybe.

Possibly because this is supposed to be a motoring forum and not one where people discuss their favourite sports?
So why has a certain DSM10000 started threads on a range of subjects most recently including Billy Connolly, VAT registration, Amsterdam and tracking down somebody? How are they more connected to motoring?

Fair enough. Different experiences I suppose. I’ve had brothers and sisters living in Australia for over 50 years, during which time I’ve visited on numerous occasions. All my family there are avid sports people so I’ve watched a lot. My experiences there have always been wonderful and I haven’t been aware of any racial remarks. I may be less sensitive (despite my wife being Asian) or I may have just been lucky.

I suppose a few short visits counts for more than living there :):). Not every Australian is a plonker and I have some good Oz friends (we had a family visiting from Brisbane last week) but the majority that go and sit in the stands do not know how to behave.....try going to a cricket game against India or the West Indies........

I'm not English but it is a bit harsh all you guys knocking your team ...since 2005 (including the current series) England have won the Ashes series 5 out of 8 encounters. Australia are the losers......:)

Very simple (you do have a lot of spare time to continue petty little feuds!), Sport ,religion etc as has been pointed out are often very contensious issues.

At no point have I said that Off topic posts should not be allowed, that is you trying to present a warped argument.

My Dad played cricket for Woolwich in South London, most summer Sunday afternoons our mum would take us on the bus, to the cricket ground opposite the Yorkshire Grey Pub in Eltham SE London, to watch him play, it was a proper council pitch with a nice pavillion with a bar and dance floor, where we'd all be after the match, me and my elder brother with our Lemonade and bag of crisps, with a twist of salt in blue paper. Win lose or draw it really didnt matter, it was a good day out.England, Cricket,
Roast Beef, Apple tart and custard. Where did it all go wrong?

I'm not sure it did go wrong. The world has changed, that's all. And if you read back at similar comments through the ages, everybody seems to think that that the current generation is changing things for the worse. And so in turn will those young disruptors say the same as they get older.

But in saying all that, what I like about cricket is that it affords all of us, whatever our age (even the haters) the opportunity to have a little run around and... perhaps even knock a few balls towards the pavilion - immaterial of our bad hips, paunchy tummies and... acid tongues. And living in Africa and Asia for much of my life, as others here have done too, cricket was often the focus of the expat community. Wives making lunch, husbands making hay, and in between, a game of sorts played at a pace to suit the conditions, which often meant a draw through heat exhaustion - or similar. Not as though folks would admit as much.

I loved reading that. Thank you. I could almost hear John Arlott and Blowers there. Where’s the cake?

I had Blowers in mind too. And Gower, my boyhood hero, who incidentally reminds me of Damon Hill. All of them with that luxuriously reserved character that the Brits on occasion, still do so well.

The writing was on the wall before the squad even left Heathrow. The players simply are not good enough, especially in Australian conditions to have won.
What is worse, there isn't anyone left at home who could have improved the situation. The Stokes affair didn't help, but he alone wouldn't have swung it.
England have been let down by a few players totally out of form and have been beaten by a far better team.

You could write my cricket knowledge on a mouses hanky, so I’m assuming the ashes are gone? And England will have to play two dead rubbers?

"Patagonian & Knight Errant, BLOWERS"
will be on TV tonight BBC 1 at 9:30 on "Would I Lie To You" With Rob Brydon, hilarious.

Yep. Just playing for pride now. Australia, rightly want to rub England's nose in it (probably because they can't beat us in Rugby Union)

Sadly, I see another 5-0 thrashing for us.

As a sidenote, I had to smile listening to England captain Joe Root tell anyone who'd listen England haven't been outplayed!
We've just lost by an inning and some Joe............get a grip.

Look on the bright side, you aren’t Scottish, we’re crap at every sport. Pretty good at curling though. English press hype you lot up into a frenzy, only to turn on the team when they usually fail. Nasty

It's a trait of sporting press the world over Mark. Build them up, then knock them down. The Brits are good at it.

You should read what the Australian and NZ press write when their teams (cricket and rugby) fail.

Yep, funny that. The media and general public, seem to love lucky losers ( Bruno, Jimmy White etc ) Maybe it’s just me, but I don’t think the likes of Mo Farah are loved the way Frank Bruno was, what’s that about?

Hang on there, we are quite good at sitting down sports or ones you can do in a pub! :)
