Funny how many people that follow the minority sports can’t promote that sport without slagging off football.

Due to my eldest lads involvement I’ve really picked up on Rugby Union, a game I found boring and stuffed full of toffs before I took the time to learn and understand it. I enjoy watching it on TV now which, if you’d told me that three year ago, id have laughed my head off!

The supporters and players of rugby are changing, a little bit like golf.
It isn’t the game for Eton schoolboys anymore. Come down to a Sarries game and you’ll soon see.

Very simple (you do have a lot of spare time to continue petty little feuds!), Sport ,religion etc as has been pointed out are often very contensious issues.

At no point have I said that Off topic posts should not be allowed, that is you trying to present a warped argument.
My sincerest apologies for offending your delicate sensitivities (not that I have a clue what “petty little feuds” you’re talking about. I should be banned for not realising that Off Topic posts should only be used for those topics that YOU sanction.
If DSM10000 likes it it’s good, if he doesn’t it’s bad.

I suppose a few short visits counts for more than living there :):). Not every Australian is a plonker and I have some good Oz friends (we had a family visiting from Brisbane last week) but the majority that go and sit in the stands do not know how to behave.....try going to a cricket game against India or the West Indies........
As I said, just different experiences. (Although taunts this morning from one of my Australian nephews coloured my views :) )
I’ve been to games against India and the Windies, still with zero issues.

Firstly I will say that my son loves rugby union and has had trials for Yorkshire and also I do have good craic with the Ruperts (the proper poshies) but it really is a sport absolutely stuffed full of middle class types that mercilessly slag off football which I find bizarre because no-one at the football gives two Donald Duck’s about rugby!

Either way, through my sons participation I’ve come to embrace a new sport and will gladly watch a game and enjoy it.

Welcome to the sport.....

When I was at school (local comprehensive), we played rugby union in the autumn term, football in the spring term and cricket in the summer term.

Even though I was not the biggest, of the three games I was more proficient at rugby and used to get picked to play in the school team sometimes at scrum half. Enjoyed rugby a lot at the time, though I've not played since leaving school. I've never been to a professional game, though going to Twickenham is on my bucket list.

As for the cricket and football, I enjoyed playing both at the time, but wasn't particularly good at either and again haven't played since leaving school beyond the odd game during my apprenticeship. Still like to watch a game when it's on and have been to the occasional football match. I've never understood the tribal behaviour, irrational hate-based abuse and violence between so-called 'fans' at football.

The only stadium sport I've seen in Australia (so far) was Aussie Rules footie between the Melbourne Demons and Geelong Cats at the MCG in 2000. The supporters for each team were intermingled, the banter between them was at times brutal, but always seemed to be based on humour rather than hatred. Didn't see any instances of violence off the pitch, and only the odd flair up on the pitch.

Look on the bright side, you aren’t Scottish, we’re crap at every sport. Pretty good at curling though. English press hype you lot up into a frenzy, only to turn on the team when they usually fail. Nasty

How dare you. I'm Scottish and proud of it. We're not bad at snooker either. :p

....... going to Twickenham is on my bucket list.......................

Go - it is an awesome atmosphere - I've been to rugby matches all over the world and Twickenham is the best every time. Years ago my son and I were at a match where SA got thoroughly smashed by England (which unlike recent times, was rare in those days). We ended up at the Paddock (a pub up the road) and over the course of the evening several England supporters bought us beers and commiserated rather than gloat............rugby supporters and players have a different view on life......

Snooker (like darts and golf) is a pass time, not a sport.... ;)

Ouch, I see Golf as a way to get away from the Mrs for a few hours.

I’m sure any fellow Golfer will agree, when you hit a perfect 5 iron and catch it absolutely sweet, you could happily die there and then.
