Well after a couple of weeks (almost) it would appear to be valve damage due to wrong oil at last service. Head is being sent away for closer inspection by local specialist then the car will be rebuilt once sorted. There were also 3 damaged tappets!
We are hoping that on inspection the valves turn out to be ok and no major works will need done on them, but will find out in next couple of days.

Ah, the joys of car ownership - anyone want to buy cmax with 44k miles on it by chance??
