I've noticed my car pulls away in 1st gear.

If you accelerate too hard in Comfort / Winter mode, they drop to 1st.

My AMG certainly did that.

I thought they pulled away in second in ECO mode. Something about more comfort. And 1st in sport mode

They do. Its also for winter to stop slipping in snow etc.

Might be a daft question. But does the in gear indicator say 2nd. Or does it say 1st even though it's in second?

Not when it is functioning correctly.

Know that on a basic 5-speed transmission, the shifter's resting position is in neutral directly between 3rd & 4th gear. Thus, to find 1st & 2nd, you have to pull the shifter toward you. For 5th & reverse, you have to push the shifter away from you. For 3rd & 4th, release the shifter and simply push or pull the shifter to find the gear. To go from 2nd to 3rd for example, simply nudge the shifter out of 2nd into neutral--slight pause--and then push the shifter forward and it will go directly into 3rd. As well, take some time and dry shift to practice getting the gears.

Are you talking about manuals?

Unless in Winter or snow type mode or manual lock up, all auto cars start in 1st. They may only stay in first for a split second but the box has to start somewhere till the gearchange system knows what situation it's in. (on flat ground, going uphill etc). What would be the point in a first gear otherwise. The ECO mode just moves the upshift change points to get to top gear as soon as possible to save fuel and also controls the "stop/start" function on certain models.

My old 7g box and my current 7g+ box both started in 2nd in C or Eco mode! All explained in the instructions, only started in 1st if in sport or manual mode.

MB's don't normally start in 1st. because they have a long standing design trait of 1st gear being so low that it's rarely needed in normal driving. I drove a 4 speed auto 190e for 21 years and in all that time could count on one hand the number of times it started in first which effectively made it a 3 speed box.. Even my current 6 speed manual has a 1st gear so low that the owners manual recommends that except for hill starts, you should pull away in 2nd. Frankly I think it's one of MB's worst traits as 99.9% of the time it simply reduces the available gears by one unless you floor it. No big deal perhaps when you have 7 or 9 gears available but it was a pain on the 4 speed auto and made it archaic compared to everyone else's 4 speed boxes that actually used all the gears.

yes i talk on this

My previous car a 2014 E300 Hybrid with 7 speed auto always started in first gear never ever in second gear regardless of driving mode.

My current car a 2016 E350 with 9 speed auto is the same it has never started in second gear and using the paddle shifters will not allow second to be selected regardless again of driving mode.

Hmmm! The plot thickens. Thanks for your reply.

See post 27 in this thread: 7G Tronic+ 1st or 2nd gear start ? | Engine

All diesel variants with 7G-Tronic gearbox always starts in the first gear
both E and S program.

Only petrol variants with 6 and 8 cylinder engines starting in the second gear
Program E.
