hi

i want to put the whole car up onto 4 axle-stands.

i saw this "how to" for a BMW...

impee's DIY Raise BMW On Jack Stands - BMW e46

what is the suggested method for a W124 estate and where in the centre area at the front and back could i jack it up?

thanks

Derek

Under the diff, and under the jacking point between engine and gear box.

a) might Derek's metal sump shield get in the way?
b) I hope he has a very low sitting 3 tonne jack to clear everything in the first place:D

a) If his is like mine the jack point is between the metal sump guard and the rear most shield.
b)Agreed. Sometimes it is necessary to give a little lift to the front (on one side) to accommodate the jack.

My god that link didnt like Internet Explorer 8, the pagination was completely all over the place - fine in firefox.

He didnt use any chocks by the wheels when jacking up the car I see :wallbash:

Derek, I've had no difficulty winding the car to the max with the MB jack then sliding the stands in behind it to locate with the bungs.

Ditto with my R129.

not on the w211 tho... no bungs :(

but i do use the puck on my jack! if you buy from ebay search for a puck and not a jack rubber as you will be sold the exact same thing at a premium!

I'd be wary of axle stands toppling as another part of the car is lifted : I've seen this start to happen and had to lower the jack again .

What I have done , with four ramps , is to drive the front end onto the first pair of ramps , then get the trolley jack under the towbar to lift the back end and slip the second pair of ramps in .

I prefer to jack onto the ramps, mainly because A) this car is too low to get up them B) I've nearly been off their sides doing it solo.

And then jack the rear by the diff, from the front of it, onto axle stands.
Alternatively rear on ramps and front axle-stands on jacking points.

The towbar is not strong enough to lift the car, eek!
The tow bar is for pulling, but if rear-ended can distort the frame, lifting the same.

Heavy-duty axle-stands don't tip, beware the cheap and nasties, but I don't fancy four axle-stands.

I had a vito drop from four axle stands.
Admittedly I was loosening a big old wheel nut using a scaffold tube extension bar.

I have never used them since. I now use short lengths of railway sleeper so the prop is wider than it is high.

Hi,

I am too trying to raise my car (2005 CL) and place it on 4 axle stands because the wheels are going for full refurbishment.

Advice on how to do this would be very grateful.

Thanks,

Done this a few times now, but then after shopping around, either my local tyre place or the Merc dealer came out about £5 a corner more than taking it to the wheel refurb direct and it's a lot less hassle. So maybe shop around. Depending on how busy they are, my local refurb will even do the same - maybe worth asking.

I have stands and a 3t trolley but it's just not worth it for 20 pounds and the time / effort.

.

I think it depends on the bracket and where it is attached .

I would agree a more lightweight bar which only goes behind the rear bumper might not be a good lifting point , but some of the better brackets which spread the load across several structural members are fine to lift by .

Even lifting by the diff can be iffy - you can damage the diff mounts .
