I haven't ever watched this so thought with this lovely holiday, I'd give it a go. Always assumed it would be all whooping and back slapping American standard stuff.

But he's a proper educated car guy. Very understated and genuinely loves his cars, and very aware of how privileged he is. Loved watching him talk about them, very giving guy.

Also his collection of Benz's are to behold.

( i do have trouble seeing past the double denim though )

Some seriously arcane techy stuff.....

Apart from a small bit of nonsensical joshing, he really does go into some remarkable technical detail, while introducing more mainstream stuff to people who simply aren't aware - things like the Hydraulic systems on the 600 Grosser, for example.

It makes Harry's Garage look like small budget stuff:

I've watched that twice!

Love the Grosser. But so many components that can fail, but when all is well, it's incomparable

Thanks for the 600 Grosser video. I never knew that car existed, is quality of that Jay Leno is such a knowledgeable and passionate car presenter. He doesn't need the money, but would have been great as the main man on Top Gear.

That Grosser though, on the road Is noticed how fast the drivers window moved, then ask explained that there it was a hydraulic mechanism and no electric motors in the car whatsover. And especially liked Leno's comment when he pressed a button reclining the rear seat that "the only sound you can hear is the leather stretching...." Genuinely amazing car.

I could close the boot all day long. (I've had a sheltered life)

Apparently it's his favourite ever car.

It's my favourite Mercedes. I was lucky enough to have a friend who had one and he let me drive it, he said I was the only person he would let drive it. Which was a great compliment, especially as I was only thirty at the time.

Was it everything you hoped?

I was lucky enough to visit Jay Lenos garage earlier this year. The man himself was there and he kindly spent some time with us between filming. The collection is unbelievably diverse with no theme other than they are cars he likes, hence no Ferrari's! His workshops are capable of manufacturing individual cars as well as maintaining the huge fleet of cars and motorcycles in the collection. Pretty much every vehicle is ready to drive off should Jay decide to take it home with him!
A very enjoyable and memorable afternoon.

The joy of his car obsession is that the value is largely immaterial - it doesn't matter how little or how much it is worth, only that it is interesting in some way.

I liked his Veyron episode.

JL: "How much is a quart of oil for one of these?"
Guy from Bugatti: "I don't know, no one has ever asked!"
:D

He also says the 300SEL 6.3 is his favourite car...

I haven't paid much attention to him but do I remember it correctly that he basically bought a garage repair business and its staff and brought them in house just to look after his cars?

You are welcome to drive mine anytime!

The W100 isn't truly ' The Großer ' : that name is properly applied to the pre-war W150 typ 770 , as used by Hitler and others .

Now THAT is a car....
