What an experience, I drove an AMG SL60 yesterday and boy could that thing shift.......seriously seriously fast.

Packing a M119 V8 under the hood which AMG have bored out to 6.0 litres from 5.0, this engine prodcuces nigh on 385bhp. There are only a handful of these cars in the country due to the cost when new, and are very rare to see, so it was nice to get the chance to give it a go.

Having owned a 500E with the 5.0 version of the M119 engine, I thought that an extra litre would not make a whole stack of difference, but how wrong I was.

The great thing about the SL60 is that its quite understated, so its like being in a stealth bomber, nobody suspects a thing, then BAM you've just been SL60'd !!

The ride is a little harsher than a normal SL500, but then you would expect that, but other than that its completely civilised and just as happy driving in heavy traffic as it is driving at speed.

It will be a drive that goes downin the memory banks :)

And if anybody is interested, the owner is selling the car...more details in the classifieds section.

The SL60 had the same suspension as the SL500, although both had the option of AMG suspension (or Adaptive Damping). It always struck me as strange that an AMG model didn't have the AMG suspension as standard! But the 18" wheels on the SL60 would certainly make it feel a bit harsher.

Anyway, sounds like you had fun!

PS did it sound better than a standard SL500? Mine is almost silent most of the time :(

Can I suggest you post the VIN number so people can check the build spec.?

Sounds way better, but still somewhat muted ....just a deep bass burble at idle.

'96 is a pre-facelift car, which is a shame.

I'm not sure they made any SL60's with the facelifted bodywork or did they?

Re pics, I won't be able to get my hands on some for some time as the owner is away at the moment....I do however have some other photos of a SL60 in silver if that helps to give a feel for what they look like.

Cheers

You were sitting, driving in it yesterday though right? If only you'd remembered your camera!

AFAIK SL60s were built as standard SLs then modified by AMG. This was a major facelift (both interior and exterior, new climate control, new gearbox, side airbags, etc.) not just a few cosmetics.

If it's late '96 then it could be post-faclift, again this is a good reason for posting pics. etc. as the facelifted cars are more desirable.

The VIN no. will let people confirm it really does have the AMG suspension (which as I mentioned was a factory option rather than standard) etc. Again, this is likely to affect the value.

I know, I know re photos........batteries!!!

Once I have the VIN I'll post it.

Cheers

Just found a few random shots of one

awesome!! shame about the interior though!

Nice

There is one for sale here

Rubbish pics though.

SL60s were made to '98 - they didn't quite make the '98 / '99 facelift which is a shame!

Yup says it's an import so I would guess LHD.

Also says only 30 were ever made ;)

Still got to be a bargain at that money even if it needs a bit doing to it.
