Hi all

Just geting my 1st MB (W124) 200E Estate 1989

This car has had a new head on it 2-4 months ago and it has just gone again. So I am getting the car really really cheap, I can fit a head ok, but i have been told that the 4 cyclinder engines are picky about what gaskits you put on them and what coolant you use, MB only. Is this right? Is there anything that I should do check/replace when the head is off?

Also is there anything I can also check before i plunge into the deep end, i.e the rest of the car.

Im looking forward to my new MB, my sister has a L reg 3.5L E class and I really like her one <img src="http://www.mbclub.co.uk/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':D'>

Thanks

James

The 4 cyl are pretty much bullet proof.

on the earlier ones (single chain) they are prone to go, whereas the duplex chain (should be in a 89 car) is a lot stronger and more reliable.

As with ANY engine, it will always run better when it has been serviced well, regularly, FMBSH is normally a safe bet, but other garages offer as good if not better servicing than MB.

Look out for ANY leaks from under the car after a long test drive... Signs of power steering fluid leaks are quite common, and shows that care has not been taken with maintenance.

Apart from that, the usual stuff to watch out for when buying a car!!

Good luck! <img src="http://www.mbclub.co.uk/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'>
