Hi

i spotted a w124 amg coupe down my road today.

reg: N686 BMT

is this a genuine car or a fake.

in metallic blue..

Maybe some of you guys with reg checkers can sus it out.

thanks

I thought the AMG engines of that era were 3.4 and 3.6 L

On my car check it says:

"The vehicle N686BMT, a Mercedes E320 Auto (Coupe)"

So that seems to say fake to me! :)

Remember all the AMG's of that era come up as the base car that was converted ...

Ah! I didn't know that! :(

They might be conversions, but the cylinder capacity that is registered with the DVLA would/should still be correct (ie, 3.6 litres).

Was it actually badged up an an 'E36', because there's quite a few 124s that were AMG-kitted (from new) but obviously with the standard engine etc. These are not fakes (unless badged to deceive), just optioned-up 124s :)

Could also be a E320 coupe with a factory fitted AMG kit, like Akash's coupe...

Which also does not make it a fake of any sort, unless of course there is a 'fake' E36 badge on the back...

Chassis number would reveal all.

even the c36`s are c280`s as a base, but do come up on dvla as C36`s.

some pics i took on the phone

just uploaded some pics i took on my phone on the day... it caught my eye from far

Isn't the C36 the first AMG after they became part of MB?
Before that they were independant from MB, so I would expect them to show up as the MB model it was based on rather than an AMG model.

Nothing fake about that car, it's not badged as an E36 model or anything like that.

Nice specced (ie, probably a factory AMG kit) E320 coupé by the look of things :thumb:

Really ?

How come Talbirs hammer comes up as an E200 IIRC ...

Actually on the log book mine was shown as an E36 and MB had it on their database as a C280, until they dug a bit deeper...

Both now corrected :)

edit: on the bright side, insurance companies don't seem to know what they are either, so insurance is usually cheaper than you might think, which is nice.

Remember that before Mercedes took over AMG....AMG were just a tuning company that happened to sell their kit through MB dealers (bit like Brabus now), which meant that you could specify or put anything from the AMG parts brochure on your Mercedes, be it a bodykit through to a complete engine conversion and as the W124 mainly falls into the pre MB/AMG era its likely that the W124 coupe you see in the pictures just had the options box ticked for the AMG Bodykit etc.......very very few W124's had engine conversions due to the expense, which is one of the reasons why there are so few E36's.

Re engine size on V5's.....my AMG Hammer which had a quad cam 5.0 V8, was shown as only having a 2.0 on the V5 as that was how it came off the production line and was then subsequently converted by AMG.

Well there's a distinct difference there :)

Talbir's Hammer (and I guess Vlad's one too) were not conversions on new/unregistered cars (such as a C280 - C36 might be viewed). I understand that Talbir's car was originally a 4-cylinder W124, but crucially it wasn't a new/unregistered car. It had already been sold/registered as an 200E (or whatever it was) before it was converted into an AMG.

AFAIK, all W124 model E36s, 202 model C36s etc were sold as new cars already converted - hence when first registered they would have to be registered with the correct vehicle details (in particular, the engine capacity).

A quick DVLA lookup will confirm this.

Eg:

Mercedes E36 AMG W124 Coupe for sale, classic cars for sale uk (Car: 13614)

That's a 124 coupé E36 AMG. Vehicle details are:

VEHICLE ENQUIRY Services Provided By DVLA:

The enquiry is complete

The vehicle details for P879 YRU are:

The information contained on this page is correct at the time of enquiry.

HTH :thumb:

There is a legal requirement to notify the DVLA of a change in vehicle details - especially stuff like engine capacity. MB wouldn't be on very good ground if they repeatedly broke the law selling vehicles that were incorrectly registered :o

MB's own data card/build sheet details when searching up on a particular car (via the VIN etc) might bring up some errors though - case in point being W202 C36s that show as originally being C280s etc. Maybe that was what you were thinking of? :)
