Hey all,

I used to come on here years ago but was gone so long I lost my profile details. Anyway, apologies for coming on with a question but I know there's a wealth of knowledge and i'm hoping someone will be able to help me.

Just bought my third Mercedes. The last two were C classes. This one is an E240 2.6 V6 2000. I absolutley love the car, nice bit of poke, drives like a dream. A little bit thirsty but I expected that. I couldn't believe it when the cam shaft sensor failed within the first 24 hours but hey, these things happen and the dealer sorted it out quickly.

I only have 2 niggles. the high beam only works intermittantly. the flash works fine. Does this mean a replacement stalk ?

Also, the power steering gets noisy (squeaky) and feels like it's vibrating as I turn the wheel. Tends to happen at very low speeds and is also intermittant. I'm just wondering if anyone has come accross this before and what the problem was. I tried to find the fluid resevoir but no joy. Even with the manual

Anyway, any help anyone can give me would be much appreciated. Apologies if this is in the wrong place, please feel free to move it wherever.

Cheers :)

Within 24 hours!?!? Where did you buy it from?

I ain't as technically gifted, so await more witty/technically educated answers

I know. Picked it up on Friday afternoon 3 weeks ago and was being towed by the AA at 11am the following morning :(

I bought it from a reputable dealer. I'm always cagey about where I buy cars. In fairness to him I don't think there's anyway he could have known it would go before hand and he couldn't have been more apologetic when it did happen.

Did you speak to him and tell him what happened? Does the dealer have a guarantee that all their cars have been checked and sold without any problems?

Yep. The car came with a 3 month guarantee and was fully serviced. This dealer has a very good reputation. Having said that I found a small gash on 2 of the brand new tyres while it was sitting outside my house waiting to be towed back in to them when they reopened after Easter. Obviously he replaced these aswell. The car also has a FSH.

He trades on his good name and he's definatley not some cowboy. In fairness i think this could have happened to anyone.

He has said he'd put these other 2 faults right aswell but i'm just wondering what's likely to be wrong as i'd prefer to go into him armed with some knowledge.

It could well be that a previous owner traded the car out because of an intermittent problem, no wonder it appeared soon for the new owner. The important part was that the dealer took care of it properly.

So this was a W210? I feel seeing posts about multifunction switch issues on the W211 but a few on other models too. On the W211 the stalk switch information is carried over the CAN bus, it sounds like a stalk issue if the high beams have an issue but the flash works fine (and if the design is the same on a W210).

Enjoy the car.

Yeah. I suspect the previous owner noticed a couple of problems and traded in instead of getting them fixed. He has had the car serviced with this dealer for the last 3 years though as it's their stamp in the book.

Cheers for that, I suspected the stalk. Still eager to know about the power steering issue too though.

And thanks, i'm already enjoying the car despite the teething problems. I had major issues with the last one too before getting them sorted and enjoying 3 years of hassle free driving :)
