J is the width of the rim, in inches.
Did you know "J" is the type of the tyre edge profile?
I only found this out recently as I could never understand why J referred to the width of the wheel. The number is the width in inches, but J references the profile of where the tyre meets the rim. It's known as the "wheel collar profile". J is not the shape, just the reference letter. It's unlikely we will come across something not J in normal car motoring, with the possible exception of JJ. Here's the list for your entertainment.
A Bicycles, mopeds, motorcycles, scooters, vans, lorries, forklifts
B Old wheels up to 6" wide, sometimes found on the old VW Beetle
D Bicycles, mopeds, motorcycles, scooters, vans, lorries, forklifts
E Lorries, vans, tractors (front wheel drive) with "semi-drop" wheels (see below)
F Vans, lorries, forklifts with "semi-drop" wheels
G, H Vans, lorries with "semi-drop" wheels
J Passenger cars
JJ 4x4 SUVs
