Key Fob does not set alarm or allow remote entry?

Just tried to remote open doors...no luck....thought it might be battery so used the spare which hasn't been used in 9 months. The Fob emits red light as usual but no remote central locking or setting of alarm.

Seems strange, since can't leave the car unalarmed.

Try re-syncronising the system.
From passenger side:-
Press remote > turn door lock > press remote again > turn door lock again

May have to do this for both key fobs.

Its seems to have worked today.

But it operates only at a distance of 1 foot from driver handle where you can close all 4 windows. If i point at it it works otherwise both new/old remotes do not engage c/LOCKING OR ALARM even at short distance of 1-2metres.
Which isn't a big problem but one would like to open/lock doors from a distance.

If they all work but only at short range, then the problem lies in the receiver side of things. In my W210 I thought the receiver was housed in the moulding under the rear view mirror, but when I removed this radio receiver, the car still locked and unlocked from the key buttons. Perhaps the system allows both infra red and radio to work the car.
