Hello folks, I have searched this forum to try to find a post that matches the problem I am currently having with my 2002 C180 Sports Coupe. Unfortunately I cannot see one, so, I wonder if you have any suggestions for this problem?
Recently, I attempted to start the car using the key fob. The engine started immediately, but I had absolutely no electrics whatsoever. The lights, the indicators, dashboard, windows etc. Nothing was working. I removed the fob and cleaned it and tried again. Several times the fob was accepted but nothing happened when I tried to start the engine. Sometimes the dashboard display would light up, then go blank again. Eventually the engine did start, but I had the same electrical issue. I kept taking the fob out and rubbing it clean, then reinserted. After many attempts the engine started and the electronics were working. Perfectly normal.
Everything appeared to be in order and I thought maybe it was just a glitch that had now cleared itself. A few weeks later however, I had the same issue. I followed the procedure (above) and eventually it started to work again. I am very worried that this may occur in the future and I will not be able to get it started.
My question is this: does anyone think that the problem is coming from the keyfob (perhaps sending confusing messages to the car)? The reason I ask this is because the remote locking system has always been very poor since I bought the car. It has no range at all and it works (but not always) only when I place the fob a couple of millimetres away from the door lock and try, try and try again to get it to lock. Invariably I have the same problem when trying to unlock. So much so that I often just give up and unlock the driver's door manually.
I have followed a tip on here and used a digital camera to check that the fob is in fact sending a signal. It is.
When I bought the car, it came with only 1 fob, therefore I have nothing to compare it to.
So, is the keyfob to blame for this or is the vehicle itself at fault?
Any comments would be most welcome.
