Evening all,

I just did a search for 'key fob' but to my surprise nothing popped up -

I understand that most MB's are sold with two keys, one a master and the other a spare. Unfortunately when I bough my '98 W210 it only came with one key which maybe the master.

I am concerned that if the battery goes flat I wont be able to gain access/start the car so i thought the best thing to do would be change the battery in the fob, easier said than done :wallbash:

There's a small catch on the top which when released lets you extract a regular key but no clues as to how to change the battery?

Is it charged by the ignition?

Cheers,

Once you have extracted the regular key, there is an indented slot that you can put it in to split open the 2 halves of the key.

Battery is not charged by the ignition (although that would be a good idea) but IIRC it is replaced as part of the main service.

AFAIK there is no "master" key... the different colours on the release catch are just to tell "his" from "hers".

Many thanks Meldrew, just ordered a couple of spares -

Mine was a bit different to that though, once the metal key was out it then exposed a grey tab which you push and the gubbins comes out the top :thumb:

Can you use the metal key for anything?

locks the glove box.

Also unlocks the drivers door if battery is flat.

The key doesn't need batteries to operate the ignition lock, it draws power from the car for that function.

Of course, It's always best to have two keys though. You can have the dealer cancel any missing keys for security.

Thanks chaps, I'll store the spare batts inside the car -

On the drivers door, is it the small black square where you push the key in?

This is probably all in the handbook which is at home as away for bank holiday, driving down "I wonder what would happen if the..." prompted the question ;)
