HELP

hi my c220 2007 has stopped responding to the key when in the ignition
It opens doors fine via remote and turns in the ignition but doesn't start or
Even try to start no warning lights on the dash only the mileage also the steering
Wheel will not lock

Any ideas?

Have you tried a second key? Really needs a Star test, but if both keys don't work, it could be the ignition switch or the EIS (Electronic Ignition System). There were some problems in this area around that year.

Do you have an Indy in your area that could Star test it for you?

ERnie

Is this a w204 c class ? If it is it will more than likely be the steering lock and not the eis

I just had this problem. I took my key to MB dealer and they can test the key. Much cheaper the a eis swap out .. mine was $240. Also check the eis fuse. Gl!!

Steering lock issue. Just had the same myself. Brace yourself the part alone is £286 inc vat

I have just had this problem occur. It was the electronic steering lock at fault and had to be replaced.

£290 for the lock and a couple of hours labour to change.

There is no electric feed to allow STAR to read the faults either.

is it a dealer only job or can it be done at home ?

If it's a known fault then why do we have to stump the bill? If that was food the supermarket wouldn't charge you again for their initial mistake, beyond me how big name car brands get away with that!

Sounds like steering lock. Can't be done at home as special key needed with software to upload and programming new lock. I have a guy who did mine but he is a Merc specialist. dealer about £600 I read? A bloody nuisance

You would need a workshop key also to code the lock to the car if you did it yourself. That's another £140 I think.

Upon completion my car was showing some error codes which had to be cleared also on STAR. I don't see anyway of reducing the cost much by doing it yourself.

My total bill was £370 which all things considered was not too bad in my opinion. Had the work been done at Mercedes it would have been much closer to a thousand.

These vehicles are 6/7/8 years old now, things go wrong. Your analogy with food doesn't really hold.

Come to my house - last week I had to throw out some gravy granules with Best Before AUG 2004.

Yes you do need that workshop key but heard many dealers won't part with one, they should if your paying but alas as they charge £600 or so to do the job suppose they think they should do it. My car also was a 2007 C220 although only done 45k when it went

I have some sympathy for this view and don't think it's acceptable for them to fail just because the car is a few years old. This is a fault that can strand you anywhere and at any time. If they can't design and manufacture something very close to 100% reliable then we should go back to the mechanical devices that were proven to work.

I agree are they over complicating things? A key must be 99% fail safe
