Key not working

I bought a 1997 230 SLK yesterday. I saw a spare key in the glove box, but cannot get it to work, I read in the manual to point it to the remote on the windscreen and press twice, then put the key within 30 seconds into the ingition, turn key to the 2 position. The key will then work, but no such luck. There is a battery in there, and the red light comes on when I press the key fob. Anybody have any ideas.

Hi and welcome. I have precisely the same issue with the spare key in my CLK55 provided by the trader I bought the car from. The 'spare' key you have is not for your car, the current price of a replacement is £215 from a dealer, you cannot buy them elsewhere.
