Key recoding

Hi guys I have lost my main DAS key and at the moment I am using the emergency one no central locking, what I would like to know if I do get a key from Ebay is it easy to get recoded or should I just go down to my local breakers and get a replacement.

Simple answer, forget eBay. Those keys cannot be recoded and you will just waste your money.Keys from eBay are only of use to use the casing to transfer the innards of a working key.
You have a choice, main dealer replacement for around £230 or give these guys a call.

Thanks thats good to know I have decided to get a lock set from a local scrap yard but I'm not sure what parts I will need to take off the scrap car and where they are. I know I need the lock barrel and the ir module behind the drivers door card is there an ECU some where that I will need as well.

Sorry just re-read and you say your car is a 97, so ignore what I have written below IF your car has the flip out key blade type fob.

I really think you are making a very big mistake, if your only issue is the lack of a key then buy a new one from MB or from one of the suggested places above.
The key/lock set you mention will HAVE to come from exactly the same car as yours even the same age and you still may have problems.
Once you find the right car you will have to make sure that they still have the keys, and you will need the Engine ECU, Steering lock and EIS switch and obviously the keys as well. But how long is the second hand stuff going to last? How much will this lock set cost I reckon you will be paying £200ish, hassle of fitting all the right stuff against a new key for £230.
Messing about with the electronics on this level is hit and miss unless you know EXACTLY what you are doing, I am not mean to doubting your abilities.
If you decide this then the unique identity of the car will be compromised.
Your choice, but my advice, buy a new key.

Thanks Andy my key isn't the flip type key it's the keyless type and not being able to use the central locking or alarm is getting on my nerves, I was hoping it would be just swapping over a few things as I don't have £240 to shell out but I can see your point and thanks again for the advice.

Well I bit the bullit and got a lock set from ebay for £85 this got me the keyless lock mech the steering lock mech and the ecu, I just gave Iven (Partsforjaguar) great gut and for that price I can afford a nice new key from here all I need to do now is have a blank(steal) key cut. What a relief I can lock and alarm my car now it only took me 1/2 an hour, if any one else needs a key set try him I have already put an order in for a set with two alarm fobs and the stand by fob even for £120 it's a saving.
