I have a standard 2002 key and want the later shiny chrome key. There seem to be so many different people giving options that I'm a bit lost. How can i easily upgrade to the later key please?

Does your car have keyless go? If so I think this is where the confusion starts. I have never seen a definitive answer as to what key you get if you get a replacement key for a keyless go car.

If you don't have keyless go I think any replacement key you get will be of the chrome variety.

That is what I have gleaned from reading various threads here and on other forums anyway.

Hi I have just bought a spare key from the main dealer. it is the same as the one pictured. (£232.00) I have keyless go, so not sure if you get a plastic key or a chrome one. I was pleasantly surprised that I got the chrome key.

I think all new keys are Chrome now

I wasn't planning on spending that much on a key when I have both in fully working order :(
I was kind of hoping you could swap out the circuit boards but that is looking like its not the case so I've contacted those Mercedes key specialists (thankyou Lexman8) and I'll see what they say.

So am I right in thinking that if I order a new key for my 2005 car that has keyless go keys that look like this

I will get a chrome key that has the keyless go functionality?

From what I've read that appears to be the case for Keyless go equipped cars.

Its £170 from the specialist key guys to get a chrome key for my non-keyless go car. Seems OK compared with Mercedes but for that money I think I'll leave it.

This is the trouble though, I can never get a definitive answer to this question even from MB themselves.

My car has both keys but one is damaged although it is functional. If I was to get a replacement then I would like to know which style I would get as would rather have both keys the same ..... looks better when you sell on IMO!

One MB dealer told me it would definitely be a chrome key, one said definitely the same as I have now as it's a keyless go car and one even said it would be a chrome key but would not have the keyless go functionality. WTF? :D:fail

Later chrome keys are rubbish, scratch easily and look tatty much quicker than the old ones. They are also fatter and longer which annoys me. Newer should be smaller!!

This could be the cheapest option…

No I am pretty sure keyless go keys have 2 batteries in them where no keyless gos only have one battery I will stand correct though if I'm wrong , will look when I get chance as I have both keyless go vehicles

If you order from the dealer you will get the latest Crome style key, however, once the key arrives you will need to pay extra because the new key needs to be coded for the keyless go function to work again.

Correct me if I am wrong.

Opposite way. Keyless go have 1 battery and it's a CR2032, normal have 2 and they're CR2025.

Correct as far as I know, some dealers have been known to code for free though.
