Keyless Entry

One of my keys (three buttons) has stopped working. I first thought it was the battery as the key was giving problems when I pressed two buttons (like in opening the boot and locking the car) in relatively short period.

It has now completely stopped working (I have changed the battery as well). Any ideas if the existing one can be salvaged or do I have to get a new one. What is the best option for a new one as one stealer has quoted £103 while another was quoted £130 for a new key.

Many thanks.

May need reprogramming? what type of key/car do you have?

Key less entry

I have a 98 C200 Elegance. The key has 3 buttons on it, one for unlocking the car, the other for locking and a third for opening the boot.

Many thanks.

Your car is a facelift model and therefore a new key should be about £50 maximum from the stealership! Make sure they have your VIN when quoting for parts.

Any recommended stealerships? I contacted the ones in Croydon and Tooting and got those quotes which are quite high compared to what you suggested.

Thanks again.

To be fair, your dealer has quoted you for an old style flip open key. Your key (called a DAS3)has been redesigned now, so on top of your £50 you'll need a new mechanical blade (the metal bit that slides into the key) at £12 as the old one won't fit your new key. Don't be narked if your dealer insists on seeing your reg document, anyone can wander into a dealer with a chassis number they've got from a windscreen. When you go to the dealers though, ask someone on the service desk to make sure the key isn't 'out of synch', although this was more typically a problem on W202 cars earlier than yours.

An update for the benefit of future readers, I ordered the key yesterday, the blade can be reused, so I have ended up paying £48 only. Many thanks for all your assistance.

what about the ones on ebay ? 3 button ones going for £15 max .. this would need reporgramming i guess so how much wood that cost??

Be careful about ebay keys that only need re-programming. I had to have a new EIS fitted to my car (the bit the key goes into) and they could not re-program the existing two keys to it so it was two new keys for me (about £45 each). The metal emergency key was transferrable. I have been told that you cannot re-program keys but I stand to be corrected on that one. My old ones still open and close the doors but they will not operate the steering lock or ignition.
