Keyless Go Problem

Morning all. Having a problem with my 2002 R230 SL and it's keyless go. It's been intermintent for a couple of weeks causing the odd problem when trying to unlock the car with the handle needing a few tugs to actually unlock where previously it just needed the lightest touch.

Next I notice it would continually unlock itself, so I would touch the little black button on the handle as usual and it would lock but within 5 seconds it would unlock itself. Oddly opening and closing the boot seemed to help this.

Finally last night I pulled over to answer a phone call (good eh) but when I went to restart using the button on the gear lever, nothing, no start or pre-ignition stages.

Car starts and locks using the infra red key no problems.
I've changed the batteries on the card, no difference.
Both consumer and starter batteries changed in last 2 months.
The dash now reads either "checking data, please wait" with a picture of a key, or "replace key" again with a picture of a key.
I've waited for over half an hour to see if it finds any data but nothing.

The last odd sympton is when I push the button on the key card both lights illuminate red, previously only one would when it was working correctly.
Sorry for the long post chaps but wondered if anyone might have a clue or suggestion. I've searched but mostly come up with replace door handle or card batteries.

hi there im having a similar problem ive just bought my cl500 2002 model keyless card opens the door no problem but cant get the car to start of the gear selector?

In the last couple of months I'm having similar problems.

My KG is of the Key fob rather than Card variety. No problem opening boot or passenger door, just the drivers door. Have changed fob batteries. No difference. Sometimes it unlocks, then as I pull the handle it instantly resets the alarm, relocks, sometimes with the door partially open.

My suspicion is either
EM interference. Could it be my mobile phone? (HTC HD2 on T-mobile), or various WiFis, or my cordless weather station. However that wouldn't explain that the other door is OK.
or
If individual receivers in each door, the drivers one is failing.

Is anybody familiar with the KG components?

my drivers door was intermittent and then stopped altogether, a new door handle sorted that out, the wires on the handle you could see had stretche and most probably snapped inside.

other things to check

- battaries in fob
- door sensor (if its a single door that hads the problem)
- the fob itself - try the spare fob.

-if none of the above works then its off to see someone with a star diag machine to diagnose it properly.

hope that helps

Thanks Alps.

It's not the batteries or fobs. The problem is with the Driver's door mechanism / electrics / electronics.

I think the item to get my initial attention is the external locking button. Can that be 'accessed' externally?

Read here an almost identical problem with a W211 & an R230. Is the W209 handle constructed similarly? That button was pulled off & WD40ed.

Haven't noticed anything untoward about the locking button's condition, but I would guess the waterproofing has failed. Hopefully fixed with a hair dryer, some WD40 & then packing it with waterproof grease.

Am quite adept at DIY / electronics / electrical tinkering.

Thought I'd up date this thread for anybody having similar issues. On my car it turned out to be the card, requiring a new one and set up time on Star to program. Works a treat now.
