Keyless Start Works but Keyless Entry Doesn't

That VIN decoder seems to redirect to Car Vertical currently. Found another one here that worked a treat:

Shows Keyless Go Option 889 on there. Seems quite a high spec car and not too much missing.

All 4 handles have the square little lock button on the outside and the longer bar button inside so guessing it has the Keyless Entry feature. It does operate and work on the tailgate OK.

I've taken both front handles out and neither pair of cables or connectors seem in bad condition. There is a small pinch in the cable on both at the kink part clearly where the handle pivots at that point in/out. Maybe it is enough to stop one of the cables working correctly. It is handle side so would get replaced with a new handle. Only way to tell I guess is to replace or try with a known working handle.
 
Seems more hassle than its worth the Keyless Entry. I never use it nor am bothered by it. Just thought it made sense to look to resolve as I'm selling the car and want it to be the best it can be ready for the next owner.

The Parktronic works perfectly now and I don't think there are any known issues now short of the Keyless Entry on the 4 doors. Maybe the next owner can take a view on it.

I'll fire up the tablet later and run it to see if I can check for any codes or errors on the Keyless Entry system.

It’s not the cable or connector on the handles that is the issue, it’s the rubber membranes on the handles themselves - they split and let water in ruining the insides.

You can easily test the microswitch function with a multimeter if you’re not sure on the issue.

Practically speaking you’d want at least the driver’s door and tailgate working IMHO. They’re the ones which get used most :thumb:

Both my keyless handles went bad and a new handle was the only repair.
There was a company in Sweden that repared them but they went offline and I assume don't do that service anymore.

Sounds odd that all 4 handles on the OP's car went faulty though? Especially as the rear ones would have seen much less use than the fronts.

The rubber just ages and lets water in, doesn’t seem particularly linked to use - mainly age and being exposed to UV and weathering - eg chemicals, frost or whatever.

I guess 20 year old rubber is bound to fail.

Modern keyless go handles are of a different design thankfully. This was MBs first go at it - same sort of design they used from the late 90s onwards.

It did sound odd to me that all 4 would have failed but I guess it is possible of course. Most people often never bother to replace failed rear handles as they barely ever get used for keyless entry if at all.

I've ordered a replacement driver/right hand side kit from mbkeyless.com as intrigued to see if they will fare better and last longer than the OEM.

If it works all good then at least it puts the unknown to bed. I can always order further kits for the passenger or rear doors to get them all working fully.
 
I've received the replacement internal module complete with cable tie and black glue stick as a nice little set.

I'm glad to report that it works all OK as just test fitted the button module loose. All works a treat for unlock and lock. For about half the cost of replacing the whole complete handle. Means of course you just continue to use your old handle and no need to get a painted handle from MB or to get a generic one painted.

So quite a nice little solution for anyone with this issue.

Just going to get it fitted permanently. Might get one for the passenger door maybe but I guess the drivers door is the most important one that is likely the only or mostly used handle for keyless operation.
 
I've just received delivery of the other 3 handle replacements so gives me a nice job to do at the weekend. So should get all 4 handles working on the keyless go entry system then.

Is it right that the rear doors need a longer torx driver than the front doors does anyone know please? That is what my research seems to suggest so far.
 
Yes you’ll need a long (200/300mm from memory?) torx driver for the rear doors. Don’t think you’ll get a bit on an extension in there, will need to be a driver.

Do you have one? Snap-on or Wera do them, no doubt others if you look around.

Great, thanks. I have some longer 300mm torx drivers but I think they might be T15. I think the handle is T20 or T25.
 
I've ordered an 8 piece 200mm long hex security torx set T8-T40 as will always be handy I suspect.
 
The torx screwdriver set from Halfords did the rear door lock on my E55. They are 200mm long
