Kickdown - Click on accelerator

Hi Guys

I have a w203 C270 CDI, now I'm not sure about petrol cars but on my diesel when i floor it and hit the click and car kicks down it doesn't seem as quick as when i floor it and leave it before the click.

I was doin about *cough100cough* and I put my foot to the floor and hit the click and the engine note changed and became more meatier but the acceleration felt a bit weak as opposed to putting your foot down just before kickdown. Feels more Torquey then.

Opinions fellas?
 
I have noticed on my cars that if I depress the accelerator all the way it downshifts as many gears as it can, but if I only depress it so it does not activate the kickdown switch it will only downshift one gear. I think it takes longer to downshift several gears.
 
I know what you mean. Held up on the motorway, you want to make a point when the other driver moves over and press hard past the click, there seems to be more noise than movement. Yet if just wishing to accelerate rapidly without too much aggression it seems to move more quickly.
 
The 270CDI engine has so much torque at low engine rpms that the car perhaps feels like accelerating faster than at a lower gear at high rpm but if you look at the power curve, it actually has more power after changing to a lower gear and running at higher engine rpm and then accelerates faster.

If you start from low rpm and high gear, it takes some time before the engine actually starts to pull, this adds to the feeling that the car accelerates faster with a low gear.

I doubt you can see it even if it did, you can feel it moving faster. Would have to measure it to be sure. But really if the engine is good (no clogged manifolds or catalysts), it has more power at higher rpms (I hope there is no need to start the max torque versus max power discussion).

I'm ignoring the time it takes to change gear, this is too difficult to take into account.
 
Hmmm - has no one cried "MAF" yet, that is a usual point for testing when you're losing top end power.
