My '78 350SL needs a new exhaust - the front pipes are worse for wear, the centre box does almost nothing (you can hear exhaust whooshing through it) and the rear box resonates horribly at idle and drowns out most boy racers. (Sounds quite nice once the revs are up!) So it's time for a replacement.
I talked to my local MB dealership who wanted a little over £1500 to replace the downpipes, balance pipe, middle box and rear box. I said thanks but no thanks. Local stainless steel specialist quoted £900 but doesn't think he'll be able to make the centre box as slim as the Bosal one that's fitted, so I'll lose ground clearance.
I looked on EuroCarParts' website - they list the two boxes for a total of £215 which is far more affordable. However they don't list the clamps, but GSF do. No one seems to sell the downpipes other than Mercedes, so I might just get them welded instead, at least for the time being. I'll also try my local motor factors, just in case.
I've had enough run-ins with crap exhausts that sound rubbish and lasted for five minutes, so I'm wary of anything that isn't a big known brand. I'm not at all familiar with Klarius - are they any good? (And does anyone know where I can get the downpipes from?)
