My '78 350SL needs a new exhaust - the front pipes are worse for wear, the centre box does almost nothing (you can hear exhaust whooshing through it) and the rear box resonates horribly at idle and drowns out most boy racers. (Sounds quite nice once the revs are up!) So it's time for a replacement.

I talked to my local MB dealership who wanted a little over £1500 to replace the downpipes, balance pipe, middle box and rear box. I said thanks but no thanks. Local stainless steel specialist quoted £900 but doesn't think he'll be able to make the centre box as slim as the Bosal one that's fitted, so I'll lose ground clearance.

I looked on EuroCarParts' website - they list the two boxes for a total of £215 which is far more affordable. However they don't list the clamps, but GSF do. No one seems to sell the downpipes other than Mercedes, so I might just get them welded instead, at least for the time being. I'll also try my local motor factors, just in case.

I've had enough run-ins with crap exhausts that sound rubbish and lasted for five minutes, so I'm wary of anything that isn't a big known brand. I'm not at all familiar with Klarius - are they any good? (And does anyone know where I can get the downpipes from?)

Hi Antharro, I work for Klarius and may be able to help you source the Klarius exhaust parts with a visit to the factory if you wanted to check it out for yourself? They are all made in the UK at the Klarius manufacturing R&D and test center in Cheadle, which is huge. The company is quite proud of the fact that they type-approve everything and regard the exhausts, CATs and DPFs they make as 'premium quality' so I'm sure we could tempt them with a positive comment and a photo opportunity if you were interested?

Hi Roland, that would be fantastic; I'm a ways away from Cheadle though! I'll drop you a PM shortly.

Impressed with Klarius' website, an excellent and accurate parts catalogue.

Roland, I can't PM you as your post count isn't high enough! I'm not sure I'd recommend posting your email address in a public forum - how else can I get hold of you? Or admins, can you allow Roland to receive/send PMs?

I retail Klarius exhausts and confirm they are very good manufacturer ;)

Klarius , formerly known as Timax .

Whilst I haven't bought any of their products , I have in the past bought Ernst , Bosal and Eberspacher aftermarket exhausts , all of which were of good quality .

The other good experience I had was with the stainless steel system I had made up and fitted by P D Gough and wrote about in the following thread

Hi Antharro,
My work contact is a matter of public record, so I guess we are OK; contact me on email roland(at)dmaeuropa.com

I'm back in the office Tuesday so can make arrangements via email then.
