Land Rover is to buy the trademark of collapsed car giant Rover.
Ford, which owns Land Rover, has told German carmaker BMW it wants to exercise an offer to acquire the Rover name.
The trademark was not included in negotiations to sell the collapsed British car firm to Chinese company Nanjing, which is planning to build MG sports cars at the Longbridge factory in Birmingham.

Is this a repeat of the Rolls Royce saga?

The "rumour" that Ford is looking for buyers for Jaguar, LR and Aston Martin has been doing the rounds for a while now. It's considered likely that a large financial institution or a conglomorate such as Alchemy will probably take Jaguar and Land-Rover together, with Ford retaining a minority shareholding and remaining a significant technology and parts supplier to both marques.

Your post and the information you've found about the purchase of the Rover brand/trademark suggests that Ford are looking to add value to LR's cachet in order to increase it's appeal to a British buyer or one who can see the benefit of resurrecting the old British Leyland style product line-up. If Jaguar, Rover and Land Rover could be placed back into British hands and made viable (with a strong Rover product range), then I for one would be delighted and possibly even quite proud...
