having just returned from a holiday in Lanzarote, I noticed the age of the taxi's out there and wondered what sort of KM they had clocked up.

so on the way back to the airport on Saturday, I asked the driver of the cab I was in. (E class estate. manual around 2000/2001 at a guess). his reply was 2,500,800. yes, 2,500,800! I was astounded at this, have never heard or seen this before on any car.

apparently a new law is coming in there where all taxi's have to be no older than 10 years as of next year so this poor old workhorse may have its days numbered.

it ran very well, although a little clatter on idle!

It's only had 3 new engines and 4 new gearboxes.

I know of several later E classes that have clocked in excess of 500k miles with no issues and still running well being used as Chauffeur vehicles/taxis.

Mine is a mere pup on 296k.

For taxis this isn't that unbelievable, I'm not suggesting it hasn't had 2 new engines and 2 new gearboxes, but they're started in the morning, and shut off in the evening doing massive miles hot in-between. Perfect situation for any drivetrain.

For lulz.
