Anybody been to Vegas?? Im going in a few days..

Any advice/stories to share?

Hello

I've been a while back, great for a few days. Looks really tacky in the day but at night it becomes alive. I'm not into gambling at all but great to walk around some of the hotels.

Cesars Palace shopping centre was great the statues that 'move' yet look solid.

Hire a dodge viper or some other silly car for half a day and cruise.

Good for a few days only.... the sound of the machines will get to :)

Thanks, renting an American muscle car is not a bad idea...

I heard it's tacky as hell, but with a few friends, I hope we don't end up like the film "the Hangover"...

Yup, great place, you can see everything you need to in 5 days or so then it gets a bit samey.

Things to do:-

Grand Canyon in a helicopter - don't book via a hotel, go online and book with Papillon helicopters.

Visit the Hoover Dam, it really is some structure.

Watch the Fountains in front of the Bellagio in the evening. If you get a chance, ride up the Eifell tower at the Paris LV and watch from there - it's something.

Don't stay downtown, it's a toilet. If you go downtown to see the Freemont Street experience, keep hold of your wallet and don't wander of the tourist tracks.

Ceasers Palace is about mid strip and you can see everything you want to from there.

There's a Tommy Bahama's restaurant out of the North end of the strip in the shopping area - eat there at least once and order the Pina Colada cake - it's outstanding.

For shopping there are the Premium Outlets at the South end of the strip.

Shops in the Venetian are good and the Forum Shops next to Ceasers have every possible label you could wish for.

Any animal lovers in the party? A day at the Mirage will be fun.

The monorail is a good way to get up and down the strip if you're not renting a car as are the buses. Don't get cabs, there's no need and they are silly expensive.

Nice hotels:-

Bellagio
Wynn
Encore
Ceasers
Paris LV
Venetian

Have fun and remember there's only one winner in a casino! Unless you're a poker player of course.

I'm going next Wednesday for a week, although I've got to work for part of it.

What he said plus:

If you like heights go on the fairground rides at the top of the Stratosphere tower.

Must do one of the premium "all you can eat buffets" (in the most expensive hotels)

Have a bit of fun gaming for small stakes (craps is a simple game once you learn the basics and is best played "Downtown" - plenty of Whooooooops to be had! Dealers are your friends and always keen to help you win - if you win they get tipped by you!)

Have a great time - Vegas is the best!:thumb:

I second craps - pool your money, play as a team and it creates a party atmosphere. The dealers genuinely do help you and we found the best way of tipping was placing a bet for them - say $10 hard 6 for the dealers! If it comes off ythey ring a bell and whoop the place down.

The main thing is have fun - don't buy alcohol, you can get it free on the gaming floor if you're playing anything.

I'm there now. Just took this picture. Strip is awesome. You can eat cheaply at one of the many shopping malls. Planet Hollywood miracle mile is excellent.
I have been to the titanic artefacts exhibition and the bodies exhibition at the Luxor. Both very well done and worth a view.
Today, apart from renewing my vows, we have been to the museum of the atomic bomb - very interesting and sobering. Wait a minute, the fountains are about to start...
There photos added.
Trip on paddle steamer on lake mead booked tomorrow, and good seats at 'O' on Wednesday.
Don't worry about finding things to do- there's loads. About to have a cold beer now, then perhaps a stroll to Ellis island microbrewery.

You will absolutely love it.

Ps. Depending on where you are staying you could try the 'sandwich'. When you check in, slip $20-$40 dollars to the cashier in your passport/credit card and ask "do you have any complimentary room upgrades"?
you will most likely get a good upgrade- in at the Bellagio for a week and $40 got me a $210 upgrade. I understand that if an upgrade is not available you will get your money back or may be offered line or buffet passes. Oooh suns just come out - another photo. First cloudy day and a relief from the 106 degree temperatures.

Can you guess I'm loving it?

Of course it gets so much better when the sun goes down.
I can also report that the Ellis Island brewery just off flamingo serves an excellent beer if a little cold.
Not the most salubrious area and I wouldn't want to wLk back in the dark but still well worth a visit for the beer alone.
Burp. :)

We went in 2003 for my brothers wedding and loved it.

Yes, it's dead tacky but that's what is supposed to be.

None of our group are gamblers but we all had a go and came out roughly even.

My wife and I stopped in Circus Circus which is a bit "trailer trash" but the rest of our party were in the Stratosphere, Mirage, MGM Grand and The Bellagio.

We hired a Harley and went to the Hoover dam.

One hotel has a car museum which is well worth a visit.

I'm going next year for my 50th birthday and looking forward to it.

Red C220 - thanks for all the tips!

.

What Ted says about the $20 tip is bang on, I forgot to mention that. We got upgraded to a suite for our last stay.

We stayed in Paris last time we went (Teds photos - directly opposite Bellagio) The do a lovely fillet steak in the mon Amis restaurant there.

Go out and eat, food in the Hotels is V expensive, nice to have for a special meal, but lunches and what have you get out and find somewhere more sensibly priced. It's easy to drop $60 - $100 a head in one fo the nice hotels.

Wine is expensive.

We love Vegas, not really a place we'd want to live but we've been 4 times in the last 10 years and even managed to fit in getting married on one of those.. :)

There is nowhere else like it on earth.. tacky and and over the top? Maybe, but hugely entertaining - and that's what Las Vegas does best. Go with an open mind, bring an appetite (the portions everywhere are *huge*) and have fun!

Cheers,

Gaz

It's the only place in the world that I've been to that was exactly what I expected it to be.

I went a few years ago. Really good, i would go back.

stratosphere rides were good!! visit the grand canyon when you are there.

we had a lincoln town car and drove from vegas to LA.

The helicopter trip we booked to the Grand Canyon area, we landed at a genuine cattle station in Arizona, through Virgin, had an offer of a free night time helicopter trip down 'The Strip' - Wow! Lots of updraughts but a great experience.
Also if booking a Grand Canyon trip, take a helicopter rather than a plane. There may be turbulence in either, but the chopper can slow down a lot and handles it better, its also much better for visibility.
We went with Papillon, pilot was an ex forces guy from Cambridge - Brill host.
Up to the top of the Stratosphere, even if you don't have the b***s to take the ride round the top or the shooty-up chair thingy, I didn't. You might be able to blag your way through the door to at least see it, cos you can't see it normally until you buy the tickets, as I recall.
LV - an awesome place. Rent a big car a for a day and drive to the hoover dam.
Oh - and all the things mentioned in the posts above! You won't have enough time.
