Le Mans

My BIL used to live in Braunschweig for a while.

I think it's shameful how the UK has gone from being a nation led by engineers, so dominating most of the World, to being led by salesmen, who generally know nothing, other than how to max out their personal commission payments.

It gives short term gain, but long term pain.

It is a sad transition - ironically the only field we still seem to lead in is Motorsport...

Anyone still watching...................sleeeeeeeepy.............sooooo sleeeeeeeepy........zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

I've flicked on and off since 2 yesterday and have decided it must be a toss up between LeMans and Tour de France which is the most crushingly boring televised sporting event.

That's OK - never mind. Lots of other people also don't understand what Le Mans is all about.

:p
I think I understand what it's about, I'm a Motorsport fan and had a box at Redgate corner Donnington for a number of years in the 90's.....it's just that even 6 hour endurance racing leaves me cold let alone 24 hour.
But I appreciate others find something in it....off to golf now which I also appreciate leaves some cold!

Wow, that was a quick turnaround at Audi !!

Endurance is the key word. To appreciate Le Mans (and all endurance races) is to understand what a monumental achievement is it to get man and machine to perform - and sometimes merely survive - for such a long period of time under the strains and stresses involved.

Without wanting to sound soft, I always get a bit emotional at the end of the race, purely because I appreciate the sheer scale of the endeavour - regardless of who wins.

I think le Mans is like test cricket. It isn't something to leap head first into, but rather it should be savoured and soaked up. Admittedly it's a bit quicker and the excitement level is a lot higher. er I think I am talking myself out of my own opinion? Anyhoo, the Tour de France is my favourite sporting event all year and I love Carlton Kirby (he also does le Mans)

A Motorpsort fan who doesn't enjoy le mans?! That's like a football fan getting bored by the world cup. I would take a bet you've never been.

I assume you're talking about cycles rather than sportscars, but that event leaves me completely cold!

One man's meat, and all that... :)
There's not much meat on the cyclists. I love the story as it unfolds over 3 weeks. Plus we have the World Champion and already one of the greatest Tour sprinters (Cav) and Bradly has a genuine chance of a podium and possibly the win itself (on GC). No Brit has done it before. 70mph on around 23mm of rubber is quite exciting I think :)

Audi 1-2-3-5. Splendid race!

You can't be anything else but impressed with a result like that. Four starts and four finishes after 24 hours. Hugely impressive. Results like that, which keep happening, are not an accident. This is why they keep winning.

And hardly unopposed - the elements, time, fatigue, all are against you in these kinds of event. Never mind competitors as well.

Roll on next year...

Perhaps I should keep my Audi and cancel the MB :D

Well done Audi and everyone else who took part. Batman for the win next year :)

I can understand Le Mans being a bit slow on TV, but the Tour de France is entertaining all the way.

You're just envious of them being able to wear lycra.

I'm not with him with regard to Le Mans, but I am with him regarding the TDF. Happy to admit that I don't understand it, nor find any entertainment in it. Also happy to be educated and enlightened!

Not remotely envious about lycra - I'm able to wear it. Whether I should be seen out in public in it is entirely a different matter.

Keep it for 'Er indoors then... ;)

I mean that Le Mans has a number of times where the race is spread out so less immediate action to watch.

Interesting LM fact, the winning car is the one completing the most laps...but it must also cross the line at the end.
