My wing mirror was looking a bit misty for a couple of months, as though there was water in it, and now it has, for want of a better term, sprung a leak, with a an oily gunk dripping down the door.

What's happened? Repairable, or do I need a new mirror?

You need a new glass mine did the same and leaked out, its the autodim fluid and a new mb mirror glass costs a fortune, iirc mine should have been £180 i bought a whole 2nd hand head from e bay for £80ish.
I am not sure if the std mirror glass fits but i cant see why not.
Ps apparently it eats the paint.

Check on ebay there are a couple for £100 to £119 each for just the glass. Mine had the shadow/cloud and managed to replace before any leaks. Very lucky though, as I was about to give up and fork out £119 to buy a used glass, a new one came up with its box starting at £50. No-one bid and I got it for exactly that. Tested it one evening and all works fine as well. If you re not in a hurry keep looking on ebay.

By the way make sure that you wash the door well. Pretty sure there have been discussions on this forum that the liquid can damage the paintwork.
