Learner driver flips car on roof in Oxford

I have not seen that - erk.

I believe there's a "pencil test" for passenger airbags, in that the cover must be of a slope severe enough to not let you rest a pencil on it?

I smoke at the wheel, but I assume the worst that could happen would be

Exploding+Cigar

I'm glad , in the light of some of the above , that none of my current cars have airbags ; in fact , I have only ever owned one car ( my 300TE ) with just the one airbag in it .

Having experienced a full frontal head-on crash with an oncoming car appearing round a bend on my side of the road , both of us doing 60-ish prior to the collision ( although I did hit the brakes and must have lost some of it ) , my lasting memory being seeing the guy in the Capri hurtling towards me with arms crossed in front of his face just before my windscreen exploded outwards - so he was doing nothing to try to control his car , which flipped over and landed in the field behind me ; I ended up on the wrong side of the road , still upright and facing the way I had been going , was able to undo my static seatbelt , open the door and step out . The car was my dad's 1970 W115 220/8 and it is because I owe my life to that car that I have always driven Mercedes-Benz ever since and the smallest car I have had was a 190E , even then I still feel much safer in the S Class and will put up with the higher running costs because I know I have something solid and safe around me and my family .

I tend to agree Derek I had a head on in a 1980's BMW 325i got hit head on by a Transit at 70 mph front end of car was destroyed, bonnet was 100m down the road but only injuries I had were some bruising to the chest where the seatbelt had done its job. Was also in a Suzui Swift that flipped again no air bag and no injuries.

During my rallying days I have had some spectacular rolls both sideways and end over end I know you cant compare that to road accidents but I have never had an injury ever always walked away.
